Re: Post Your Group and Section Photos Here

Which of the horns in your signature is that thing? I guess I haven't updated that. It's a Rudy Meinl Bayreuth 5/4 BBb. I got it from a local community player. He was able to attend the concert and hear it from the other end! I’m a bit green with envy. The Bayreuth model is one I have always wanted ...

Round Top Brass Band. My section mate was out of state, and the ORIGINAL tuba player from when the band started up in 1971 came from Colorado to fill in (and visit some family).

Beautiful playing! All those Bordogni really pay off, don’t they?

It has been in Round Top for the last two years. There are discussions currently about each band taking a turn hosting it in their city, with Dallas possibly going first in March 2025.

The Houston Brass Band at the Texas Brass Fest

Last month, we had the second annual Texas Brass Fest featuring the brass bands from Houston, Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio. I have already posted the massed band performance. Here is the Houston Brass Band performance. The other bands’ performances are now on the brass fest channel. For your c ...

Re: Eb tubas

I cannot believe I am actually saying this, but I have been playing exclusively Eb (and some BBb) for the last several years, and I love my Eb tubas. I have used them on everything from Orchestra, Band, Brass Band, Quintet, Quartet, to Jazz Band. I have a Big Mouth Brass Eb and a Boosey & Hawkes ...

Texas Brass Fest - Massed Band

Here are the four selections from the 112 member massed band at the Texas Brass Fest last month. This doesn’t begin to capture the enormity of sound, but you can get the idea. Tunes: Horizons Amazing Grace Semper Fidelis Pines of the Appian Way Bands: Houston Brass Band San Antonio Brass Band Austin ...

Re: Tuba Solo, Brass Band, et al…

I bet you had fun with this, Doc. (Maybe not as much fun as at the brewery, though?) Are there lots of Eb bass solos in the brass band literature? I’m trying to treat this like one of your play along by ear videos. The fiddly bits will take a few passes. Just ignore the mistakes. :smilie8: Yes, it w ...

Tuba Solo, Brass Band, et al…

I got to play a solo with the Houston Brass Band. I was playing Bb on the concert, and I had a cold Eb waiting for me up front. It wasn’t perfect, but it was fun, and the crowd really liked it. And that’s fine with me. https://youtu.be/L_yFX46vTYo?si=_Cnd_N7jTbrnUXul If you like brass band music, ch ...

Re: Eastman 534 vs the 562

Hey doc, can you compare those two directly? What do you feel the hagen does better than the 562? Am I right in saying they feel similar, but the miraphone is larger? The Hagen is bigger in most respects. It plays like a 5/4 tuba, whereas the 562 plays like a 4/4+. The Hagen has a deeper, richer ...

Re: NABBA Championships this weekend

My second section band played the test piece late in the day (surely the judges had enough by then), but we play very early Saturday for choice piece, so I’m looking forward to enjoying lots of bands after that without any stress. I listened to the live streams. Y’all set the bar very high for the r ...

Re: All bloke thinks about is tuning.

I shared with bloke a video of recent Easter rehearsal in which I used the Packer Eb. (I’m still not the finest sight reader of bass clef on Eb😳). After going back and listening to it, I should probably issue a public apology to Joe, as the intonation was not up to my standards (no fault of the inst ...

The only reason I sold the 562 was to get a 496. Otherwise, it was a very good instrument.

Re: old friends - old tracks

@bloke
The piano player on those recordings is the legendary Floyd Domino, the same piano player that won Grammy with Asleep at the Wheel for his rendition of One O’Clock Jump.
He can do it all. And not many better playing stride.
