I asked this question over on Dave Werden's forum a couple of years ago. I purchased my 321 in 1984 and it still has the metal valve guides. I would suggest the Sony MDR-V6, but they have long since been discontinued. You could try the Sony MDR-7506. They are a bit out of your price range (~$80), but you can probably find a used pair for less. I still use my 30-year-old pair of MDR-V6s for general listening at home as I prefer the flat ...

I owned a 642 for about 10 years and replaced it with a Neo a couple of years ago. I found that the 642 blew a little easier in the low range.
