Re: New Dillon 995 has arrived
That looks like the Chinese King 1140 knockoff. A local school has a King 1140 and I held it and checked it out last winter. The 995 is DEFINITELY a 1140 copy. Not surprisingly, the King is much heavier and has much better workmanship (this 1140, like most school horns, has had the tar beaten out ...

It’s been a great outlet for me.
I'm thinking about adding a horn from Mack, although I'm looking at a TU210 or possibly a TU200, depending. Not sure.

Re: New Dillon 995 has arrived
Nearly 2 years later, I'm still playing the Dillon (it's done well for me thus far) and I sound "a bit" better than I did back then. A few observations about my journey: I remember getting out some easy music and trying to work on it. My wife came home and I told her "Man, I just can't read the ...

Re: Your thoughts on a Miraphone 186-4U BBb tuba
You all have figured out the reputable seller, it's on hold for me to go try out in a couple of weeks by appointment. I only live about 3 hours drive from him, so it's nothing more than reasonable weekend drive. I'll play the horn first and see if it fits me and what I am looking for. And yes, it ...

Re: Your thoughts on a Miraphone 186-4U BBb tuba
It's your $5,000, and the freak jury here will not be investing a nickel. Before all the hyperinflation, that would have been considered a pretty high price for a used one, but if it's a cream puff, that's half of the cost of a new one. If it's a cream puff with a 16 and a half inch - and I owned ...

Re: Your thoughts on a Miraphone 186-4U BBb tuba
Take care that this one wasn't inexpertly refurbished. I have seen some nice looking old Miraphones that had shot valves. To me, high $4xxx range seems just a bit high for a BBb of that vintage, but if it's really as nice as claimed and the valves are good, it may be worth it. "A good deal" will ...

Your thoughts on a Miraphone 186-4U BBb tuba
A reputable source has one nearby in excellent condition for sub-$5k. I've been playing for a 18-months and am thinking upgrade from my entry-level Chinese horn (a surprisingly nice Dillon student horn). My question is if any of you good folks have experience with this Miraphone and your thoughts ...

Re: The Tuba Christmas Website got a Facelift
There is one not far from me (Ottumwa, IA) and I've talked to the coordinator, planning to go.
The real question now is whether I should take my upright or be that "redneck with the fiberglass sousaphone drowning everybody out"?
Tough choice!

Re: WTB: Helleberg Sear American Shank mouthpiece in good condition
BTW by "in good condition" I mean in any condition good enough to get accurate measurements off of. I'm planning on having it reproduced in better materials.
Heck, I'd even "rent" one for long enough to have it scanned and measured by somebody who could reproduce it.
Thanks!

and magically the rednecks in the back - who play their sousaphones way too loud and play the first tuba part or even the first euphonium part - will get lost on the way and won't show up. Sounds legit.
When I play mine it's a sosophone. I aspire to make it all the way up to mediocre, that would be an improvement!

Re: Your sound... Discuss
I have three basic parts to my sound, and it carries across all horns.
1) Bad accuracy
2) Bad intonation
3) Bad tone
I have no difficulty maintaining these three qualities no matter which horn I switch to.

Re: Adult “Beginner” Mouthpiece?
I say get a plastic Helleberg from Kelly. Or one of their other standard size plastic mouthpieces. It's what I did going from euphonium to tuba as an adult. Then I bought a stainless Kellyberg when they were on sale. I'm no expert but I do love the Kellyberg plastics, I play one on my sousaphone ...

Re: Adult “Beginner” Mouthpiece?
You might give the Kellyberg a try (plastics are inexpensive) and if you love it you can upgrade to metal in the same mouthpiece. Have you tried it? Just wondering if the two are really that identical, or possibly a little different due to very different manufacture, like minor differences in ...
