Re: Cronkhite or Messina?

I’m in the process of getting a bag from Cronkhite for my Willson 3400S-FA5 (their compact Eb). As in your case they didn’t have a pattern for it, so I made all their measurements and sent them in. They replied saying the dimensions were really close to a Kanstul 902/5C, which fits in the bag made f ...

Re: Cronkhite or Messina?

Title says it all. I’ve decided that the only way I’m going to get a gig bag that fits my Kanstul 902-3B correctly is to have one custom made. A Messina or a Cronkhite would be approximately the same money. Which would you choose, and why? Especially valuable would be opinions of folks who have exp ...

Re: Free books (no sheet music)

I could use the “Folk and Traditional Music of the Western Continents” by Bruno Nettl, 1973.

Thanks,

Re: Wick mouthpieces

Plating, as I understand it, is not difficult on something like a mouthpiece. I used to know Tom Greer (RIP) who made Moosewood horn mouthpieces. Once when I was at his house, he was silver plating one and had it suspended in a glass of water, maybe with a silver rod and hooked to a D battery or ...

Re: Tuba-Shipping Tips?

Based on size, Grand Wardrobe box. Box-in-a-box if you can manage it. I just got a horn shipped to my by the Mighty Quinn folks, and that is exactly how it came. Tuba was in a heavy plastic bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, and placed in a box slightly bigger than it was. Then all that was placed in a ...

Re: Gabriel Capet Eb Tuba

I wonder if Willson has an A440 slide they could provide. Sounds like you did your due diligence with regard to identifying the issue. I wrote Willson and asked if they either had or could make a longer slide. After a couple of days I got a reply from Willi Kurath himself, saying it was possible. I ...

Re: Gabriel Capet Eb Tuba

I’m having fun getting to know the horn. It’s been a learning experience: The receiver is European shank, and all the mouthpieces I have are generally smaller. But I got an adapter from Thomann and what I have works for now. Mainly playing with a Miraphone TU-23. It definitely sits sharp, and takes a ...

(Since it has been a little while - this is regarding my 1928 Martin Monster Recording Eb) Not as certain as i feel i should be, and recording bell may skew things, but i believe 20" is the mammoth model on eb? Out of curiosity, what is the collar diameter? I can speculate that is a blast to play ...

Re: My Tuba & I, Post Yours & You

They had two sizes of Eb: “Medium” (which had a 17” upright bell or a (?)” recording bell and a bore of around .620. Then the “Monster” Eb which had a 20” upright bell or as you say a 20” recording bell and a bore around .687-.690” . . . . I’ve never had a chance to play one of their Monster Eb but ...

Re: My Tuba & I, Post Yours & You

TxTx wrote: Me and my 1928 Martin Eb. That looks to be Martin’s Monster Eb size, is that correct? I think it is the intermediate model, from digging around on the internet some years ago. Bell is 20” and I usually sit it on my left leg. I’m not super tall - about 5’7” - so that might make the horn s ...

Re: Storing bell-front tubas

My “good” horn (until the next one shows up this Tuesday) is a 1928 Martin Intermediate Eb with a recording bell. It lives in one of the K&M tuba stands whether I am not playing it at homes or shows. There’s a rubber thing on the bottom part of the stand that provides the only front-to-back restr ...

Re: Gabriel Capet Eb Tuba

All that to say if I had to replace my current Eb, a Capet would be in the running along with a Norwegian Star. I think I would want something at least more compact in hindsight, but if weight was a concern I would go with a Norwegian Star. The Norwegian Star was one of my leading candidates. I’ve p ...

Re: Gabriel Capet Eb Tuba

So I went and tried it last Friday along with a couple of Bbs they had. I liked it quite a bit - way better intonation than what I have been playing (my 1928 Martin Intermediate Eb) and seemed to really sing in its high register. Also seemed pretty strong in its lower range, which I’ve also s ...

Re: Gabriel Capet Eb Tuba

Curious - I see this horn on Willson’s website and at Mighty Quinn but nowhere else. I do see a “compact” 3400 at Dillon and find some mentions of it on the forums. Same or similar horn? Or totally different?

Re: Lathe Biz

Thank you so much, Eric. This is just the info I needed. I got a look today. It's in great condition and owned by a retired engineer who takes very good care of things. 10" South Bend with a 4.5 bed. This is my chance to have a really nice lathe. I spent the summer after my freshman year working in ...
