Re: Piston vs Rotors observation, and the dreaded low C

Probably the best rotor F tuba I played (many years ago) was a Rudi Meinl 5rv F. It played and sounded like butter, top-to-bottom. No problem with the low C register. Just tooting on it at a tuba conference. I was amazed at how well it played! Conversely, several years later, I bought a piston Meinl ...

Re: "I don't like pistons/rotors."

^ I still like and have a soft spot for Hirsbrunners. I know there are more 'refined' Yorkaphones out now, but I still really enjoy Yorkbrunners. As for rotors or pistons, I like em both as long as they are well built. For old rotors, a lot of the time the linkage needs to be tightened and oiled ...

Re: Something important that has become lost due to wide recording dispersion

Vince DeRosa actually made the Conn 8D popular in orchestras when he started using it in the LA film studios in the 1940s - 50s. He played it in the studios for many decades, and others followed. The last couple of decades the F horn sound has changed, and brightened considerably.

^ But there is no denying that some things come easier for some ppl than others. Everyone learns different. If you even have a slight understanding that each brain, and each person is so complex and 'wired' differently, then it makes sense. Why do some ppl on the spectrum (Autism/Aspergers) do some ...

Re: Something important that has become lost due to wide recording dispersion

I don't really listen to orchestras these days for the reasons you mentioned above. I'm not crazy about how they sound so similar now. Today's big orchestras: -- F horns are brighter/thinner (like the Euro orchestras), which is fine for chamber playing, but I don't like that sound in larger groups ...

Re: FS: Conn 10J 3v BBb, $500

These play very well!

The generous 18" bell, outer bows size and .695" bore thru valves/slides make me think of the 10j tubas as "7/8" size tubas, but that's me...

Great price

Re: trombone rant

This has spilled over into jazz/big band trombones. This first/solo trombone player in the big band I was playing in always used a medium or large bore Getzen trombone with F-attachment. 🙄 I was on bass trombone, with a King 7b copy, which is great for that music. The first/solo trombone is a good pl ...

There was an old silver Martin 6/4 ish BBb tuba with 4 top rotors floating around years ago. I remember it being posted on the old forum, and it had been at Dan Oberloh's shop.

The PT-88 is a large mouthpiece, no matter what horn.
If it works for you on the MW18, then don't worry about it.

Re: Lewisville, TX GovDeals: YBB-641

I think it's ridiculous that frigging middle schools are buying full size, 4v tubas. 4/4 4v tubas are better for high school and college and beyond. Kids are just learning to play in middle school. Back when I was in middle school, we had an old beat up YBB 102 (long discontinued model) and a King ...
