Re: ENDED Vintage 1924-34? Conn 80J BBb Recording Bell Tuba
I would just like to add this about the Conn tuba. I think I got lucky finding this tuba for the price. It only looks about 25-35 years old but according to the serial number on the top of the second valve and Conn/Seller’s serial number 218348 look up it is dated to 1924. I understand the valve c ...

Re: ENDED Vintage 1924-34? Conn 80J BBb Recording Bell Tuba
Are you outside the return window? Seems like you just received this not too long ago. I don’t want to return it. I love the way this tuba plays, sounds and feels. I just was thinking it was too heavy to lug around. I got a large cart for moving it and that makes it much easier to move. It is an a ...

ENDED: Vintage 1924-34? Conn 80J BBb Recording Bell Tuba
I have decided that I will keep both tubas for now. I have spent too much already and buying another tuba is not prudent at this time. I thought the Conn 80J 4 FA valves tuba was too heavy until I weighed both tubas for possible shipping. The 5/4 Conn weighs 25 pounds and the 3/4,(or 7/8’s?), 3 TA v ...

Upper dentures specific problem.
I have just returned to tuba after over 13 years of not playing because I mistakenly believed that it was not possible to play brass with upper dentures. I started out on trumpet around the beginning of the year after seeing the Chet Baker movie, then switched to trombone for a few months, but I ...

Re: Couesnon euph (saxhorn?)
I have a 4 valve, too. I think the C and Bb versions are just an interchangeable leadpipe tuning slide. Confinement #1 - The Sound Of Silence (Euphonium & Saxhorn) I have a BBb Couesnon 3 valve tuba, model 2717 is the closest on the website. I am really enjoying this tuba. I do not need to play ...

Re: Mouthpiece question.
I thank y’all for the responses, I really appreciate all the advice. I think I am going to go with the silver Bach 25 for now. I still need to get my chops back and like Arnold Jacobs says I need to concentrate on making music in the brain and stop focusing on the embouchure and equipment. I have an ...

Re: FS: Vintage 1924-34? Conn 80J BBb Recording Bell Tuba
Those are new horns that Mack imports. I can't say if they're built to their own specification or just selected from the available models that the factory produces or what. Mack is a pretty lean operation - they import, sell, and ship out to buyers. I've had their 210 model for about 2 years now ...

Re: Adding fourth valve to three valve Couesnon.
The reason I keep going back and forth on getting a four valve tuba or keeping the three valve Couesnon is that I used to play symphonic tuba in my early years, so my brain keeps thinking that 3 valves is a limitation. Intellectually I realize, especially at 63 years of age and only just recently ...

Re: Mouthpiece question.
I thank you all for your insights, they are most helpful. Yes, I am definitely overthinking everything. I think the main problem I have is not so much equipment, I think it is silly pride. I played tuba in HS, sousaphone mostly, but some on a four valve Conn recording tuba. Then after HS I was in ...

Re: Adding fourth valve to three valve Couesnon.
Would you spend $5000 on engine improvements to a $3000 car that would be worth $3000 after the improvements? Adding… What you’d probably have to do is source another Bb of the same make and model for the valve, valve casing, and tubing. So roughly whatever you paid for the current horn, you’ll have ...

Mouthpiece question.
My understanding is that the Bach 24AW or equivalent is the most common size mouthpiece. Correct me if I am wrong. I have found that when I played a Bach 18 or 14D size mouthpiece on the tenor trombone it was less taxing and took less airflow than a larger mouthpiece. Does anyone have thoughts about ...

Adding fourth valve to three valve Couesnon.
What would it take to have a fourth valve added to an existing three valve 3/4 BBb Couesnon tuba? I have searched the archives and I realize there are pros and cons, but I am specifically looking to get an idea of parts needed and labor costs necessary to add a valve. I have included front and back ...

ENDED Couesnon (Kwee-nōn) 3/4 3 TA valves BBb tuba.
I have checked out everything I could find on this French made 3/4 3 TA valves tuba on the internet. I believe the model number is 2717? It is easy to play, the bell and some tubing has dents, but does not effect it’s playability. It is a really nice full sounding tuba for anyone who wants a smaller ...

TU422L BBb 3/4 tuba question.
Has anyone purchased the TU422L 3/4 BBb 4 FA valve tuba from Mack Brass. I am thinking about getting one because the Conn 80J 5/4 4 FA valve I have is too big for me to haul around, let alone play. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on that tuba, the TU422L?

Good luck with the sale. https://mackbrass.com/tu422l-3%2F4-bbb-tuba Might wanna check out something like this when you’ve got cash in hand. 4 valves in a small package. The more I think about it the more attractive that Mack tuba seems. I just have a bit of trepidation because that price seems r ...

ENDED Vintage 1924-34? Conn 80J BBb Recording Bell Tuba
I have a Conn 80J recording bell, 5/4 BBb 4 FA piston valves, tuba, according to the Conn serial number website S/N 218XXX is 1924-34. This tuba functions beautifully, the valves and slides work properly. The sound is big and full and it plays very well. I have come to the realization that it is way ...

Tuning bits on 80J series Conn Recording Bell Tuba
I asked this question in another post, but I didn’t receive a direct answer. The lead pipe on my 82J? Conn ( it has 80J stamped on the body side bell tenion, but it is 4 front action valves.), is so close to the bell section it makes it difficult to read the music. Does anyone have experience with e ...
