Re: Show off your bell-front tuba!
Got this 1946 Conn 20J for $500 from a guy in a community band. She plays wonderfully and makes a lot of racket. She’s my go to band bass for indoor and outdoor use. When I’m inside I just turn the bell to my left and it points up at a 45 degree angle.

Re: $500 1946 Silver “Naked Lady” Conn 20J
Turns out the 5th partial is fine, just had to adjust the slides. I’ll probably still get the dent removed from the lead pipe at some point, but I’m in no rush.

$500 1946 Silver “Naked Lady” Conn 20J
A guy in a community band sold this baby to me for $500. Came with the cases and a tuning bit. Plays amazingly well, have to use alternate fingerings for the 5th partial because it’s notoriously flat. Has the flat 3rd partial F but it’s easily lippable. Sounds like a pipe organ especially in the low ...

Re: 6/4 glut
Owned a 6/4 BBb. The sound was dark and full under the bell. But once you’re in a section of tubas in a large room, any tuba will sound huge. I now play EEb 4-valve compensator and it’s all the tuba I need. I’ve supported an entire 50 piece band by myself with it just fine. Let the room do the work.

Re: F tuba in a community band?
F tuba can work in a community band. It depends mostly on how many are in your section and in the band total. No matter which key of tuba you’re playing, if you’re playing in a band with more than 25 people by yourself, even a 6/4 BBb won’t be enough. For every 25 people in the band 1 of those peopl ...

Re: 6/4 glut
I understand the concept of tone color, which is why I prefer the 4/4 size tubas over the 6/4 horns. In a large lively space, any tuba will sound massive especially if the bell is fairly large and the bore is not too constricting. In dead spaces where the lower overtones get lost, a 6/4 tuba becomes ...

Re: 6/4 glut
Being it a wind band an Eb will be totally buried. Didn't you call those Eb's "small C tubas with a pretty sound". I’ve played my EEb 3+1 in a two piece tuba section with the other guy playing a Miraphone 186. We’ve gotten the hand several times and this was in 50+ member wind ensemble rehearsing in ...

Re: 6/4 glut
I’ve owned a 6/4 BBb tuba, and I can tell you they don’t really offer more sound out front. Under the bell it sounds massive but once the sound propagates in the hall, all tubas sound massive. I currently play a 3+1 compensating EEb, and that horn sounds massive in the hall. No need for a big tuba, n ...
