For schools that split their programs by audition: top band, middle band, bottom band, basement band, bargain basement band (as needed).

Re: Cronkhite or Messina?
Both are quality bags. The Cronkhite for my JP377 fits like a glove, but it's the Besson 982 pattern in the drop-down menu. The Messina bags have a little free space in the top corners. Two of the guys I've played with for years have their bags and are happy with them. I like the extra zipper pocket ...

Re: paperless
Since I said I'd only go to a tablet only when I have to, I thought back to gigs on bass where I had to tape 8 or 9 pages of nonstop bass charts together and use two music stands. Or the times I had 20-page piano parts to work from and had to either make up my part and hand write it or just lay out ...

Re: Re-activating a long unused horn
From watching a master repairman and restorer clean silver horns, I'd use a lot of strips of strong gauze or soft cloth to get around the valve tubes and knuckles in particular, and be patient to only do a little at a time. Don't be afraid to discare the used strips to polish, and then another to ...

Re: paperless
If we go completely paperless with everything, the world's going to be taken by pulp wood trees. They will become the new kudzu. Ironic, considering that the packaging world is slowly moving away from plastics to paper- and pulp-based packaging products that can be easily recycled. Paper and ...

Re: 4/4 or 5/4 BBb Tuba
Does the 3rd valve allow a top slide pull? It might be better for pulling in the pedal range than 1st. Some horns allow it, most don't.

Re: Helene - everyone okay?
I'm about an hour north of David in NW GA. We had not so terrible rain and moderate winds. I really feel for the folks in the southern half of the state and in the Panhandle. It was a disaster for them.

Re: Besson
Besson made superbly playing big BBb horns with a gorgeous sound, but their concepts of ergonomics were godawful for non-giants.

Why not ask Miraphone if they'd be interested in evaluating it, just for kicks?

Re: C.G Conn 20j
Over the years, Conn changed the weight of the horns. I don't know if they used different alloys or different thicknesses of metal, or whatever. I've put 20J's on scales over the years, and they've varied from 26-29 pounds. I also had a G&W Bayamo on the 25J when I weighed it, so it may have ...

Re: C.G Conn 20j
A 20J can weigh 52 pounds if you've dropped a couple of 12-packs of beer down it. College kids. My 25J weighed 31 pounds (no brew).

Re: What make and model of 6/4 CC tuba should my parents buy for me for college?
That's a lot like asking if parents should spring for a Hummer or an Bugatti as a college car.
