Re: The best...
The best F tuba is an Eb I agree 100%!!!! I played Eb tuba as my bass tuba for 43 years, ever since Paul Krzywicki brought 3 of Yamaha's early Eb tubas back from a tour of Japan. It sounds more like a tuba than some of the German rotary valved F tubas did and was much less expensive. My contrabass ...

Parting With Personal Tuba Music Collection
After 45 years of tuba study, performance and private teaching, I have retired and wish to pass my accumulation of tuba music on to any serious student, educator and/or performer that would like to have it and put it to good use. The collection has not and will not be itemized. It includes, but is ...

Re: York Monter EEb Tuba Customized
That was my MW CC tuba that rapidly sold through Baltimore Brass Company. The York Monster EEb tuba is totally my design, but, since I had no shop space during the period, I had the Bob Pallansch assemble it from my parts. The York is everything I wanted in a bass tuba, a HUGE York sound, great ...

Re: Besson 15" bell satin silver Eb
I briefly owned that exact model Besson back in 2001. I got it from Baltimore Brass Company. I can't remember what I did not like about it but, I returned it. Eb tuba has always been my bass tuba along with the CC contrabass. That Besson was another stop on my hunt for the "Holy Grail".

Re: Tuba for quintet
Play whatever tuba you have. Just have the quintet tuba sound firmly implanted in your conscious mind and play that sound. Over 40 years of brass quintet playing, I have played everything from a Yamaha non-compensating Eb tuba to a 5/4 Rudy Meinl CC tuba with success. Other tubas have included a ...

Re: What's the 188 of F tubas
The only F tuba that I owned was the Yamaha YFB 822. The sound was huge, the response was even through all registers and the intonation was very good. Being a long-time Eb tuba player, I was looking for a tuba in F that sounded and responded like an Eb tuba. The YFB 822 was it. However, when I ...

Re: Abe Torchinsky's rotary CC King
As a post-script to my previous post, Mr. Torchinsky told me that the idea of the third valve slide beside the first valve slide was his. King/H. N. White did the modification for him. After playing Mr. Torchinsky's King, Mr. Bell and Mr. Novotny had there tubas altered also. Before my time with Mr ...

Re: Abe Torchinsky's rotary CC King
“Randy” might be Randy Harrison (hbcrandy on TN) who studied with Mr. Torchinsky, I believe. The "Randy" is not me. I did study with Mr. Torchinsky later in both of our lives and asked him what happened to his King CC. He told me when he sold his King, it was to a someone at the Aspen Festival whe ...

Re: Asia-manufactured tubas equipped with subpar valves (and subpar slides)
Per two of my mentors in the repair/design trade, Bill Kendall (formerly Walter Lawson's valve man) and Walter Lawson, himself,a good rotary valve an casing should be tapered, not cylindrical. This also goes for the shafts and bearings. That way, as the tapered valve is lapped into the tapered ...
