Re: Serpent and ophicleide on Berlioz

I've played that piece (too?) many times, and several of the overtures multiple times, as well as some of the major works, such as the entire Damnation of Faust, Requiem, and that big "band" thing...uh...(trying to remember...) something-something Funeral and Triumphal... Lately (when most Berlioz ...

Re: Serpent and ophicleide on Berlioz

One of them is when the tuba is asked to play the Mendelssohn part for contrabassoon or serpent in the Reformation Symphony. Since most modern ears are accustomed to hearing it played with contrabassoon, I play that piece on F tuba in the contrabassoon octave. The part's actually for both ...

Re: Chromatic Bass Horn/English Horn

Yay! That video is awesome. Now I want a chromatic bass horn. I actually want all of those horns, and every one he's played on in his videos. It is so great to be able to hear these instruments again, now to get them played in an orchestra! Better yet: Have new ones made based off the older ones ...

Chromatic Bass Horn/English Horn

Servus mitanand! Does anyone know where I can find decent recordings of a chromatic bass horn or an English horn? Jack Adler-McKean has a bunch, but I can't only watch his videos. I am, however, grateful as all get out to him! I found a lot of music to practice on my ophicleide and such because of ...

Re: French C tuba instead of Cimbasso?

Okay, update! I found out I'll be on the stage band, not IN the orchestra. I totally forgot to ask which I was playing. But still... I think the French C will work fine for the band, but on IMSLP, they've got 2 tuba parts, one in the cimbasso range, another in the BBb tuba range. Do any of y'all ...

Re: French C tuba instead of Cimbasso?

Should you go with the cimbasso, let’s start with 100 sq ft of chicken wire…… For the violas…and….. yeah...I don't think it will fit in a phone booth... ...though I doubt that the person inquiring has any idea what a "phone booth" is. HAHA, of course I know what a phone booth is! My dad owned one an ...

Re: French C tuba instead of Cimbasso?

Haha, Bloke, I've got one of those ophicleides already, but it's not lacquered. I played it in the philharmonia recently. Symphony Fantastique, of course...Now if I can only convince my buddy in the orchestra to have them play more ophicleide material. I doubt it though...If you're curious, I posted ...

Re: French C tuba instead of Cimbasso?

Yay! Yeah, I'm not TOO worried about what Verdi would think. He is dead, long dead...I'm just curious about the blend with the trombones and the overall sound in the orchestra. My friend said they're used to hearing a BIG tuba sound, but then....Playing Aîda on a BBb just seems like overkill, also ...

French C tuba instead of Cimbasso?

Okay, as you may have seen from earlier, I am in love with my Wessex French C. I, however, do not have money for cimbasso as well...I want one, but no go. So, my question: I was asked to play tuba on Aïda recently. I don't own an F tuba (and there's none around I can use). I've got a little ...

Re: Describe the French C tuba

I'm making videos now with my Wessex French C tuba to show the sound it can create. I am, by no means, the BEST French C player in the world (but I am the best one in Macedonia, as I am the only one). Here is what I've done so far. If you have any comments, feel free to leave them. I'd like to ...

So, what horns did you want to buy?

BTW: Kinda a big fan of your work! I geek out on your youtube videos. Hella good!!!!!
