Re: Repair Question

Is that the new “vented bell” feature I’ve been hearing about?

Re: Holton 345 info seeking

@JeffT96, there’s a thread over here... http://forums.chisham.com/viewtopic.php?t=62213 That has some decent information albeit with a few holes due to posts being removed. Regardless, looks like not a tremendous number were made (especially compared to Kings and Conns) and only for a couple of d ...

Re: Holton 345 info seeking

I’m really in the research and fundraising stage of things at the moment. Thus I was wondering about general availability and price range. I’ve definitely gotten a decent idea of both now -I think. So, thanks to all who replied.

Re: Wessex Linz and Berg

I tried Linz for a minute or two and heard a colleague try it, too. It felt really playable and had solid (although not really perfect) intonation. I didn't like the valves at all. They felt like the ones I had on the school-owned Strauss – somewhat sticky and slow, and kind of unpredictable, which ...

Re: Wessex Linz and Berg

@Jefft96. I am sorry, but I have no idea what valves were on my sample. Honestly, I don't care. For me, I ask these questions: 1 - Does the instrument make the sound I like 2 - Is the pitch workable (NO tuba plays perfectly in tune) 3 - Playability. Do I have to screw with it, or can I just play ...

Re: Wessex Linz and Berg

I had a Linz here for almost a year and played it at every opportunity. It was as 'plug and play' as any F tuba I have ever played. I'd still have it if a dear friend didn't need a good F tuba. For more info, PM me. Thanks! Does the Linz have the Wessex Z valves (last I checked the website it didn ...

Re: Holton 345 info seeking

Thanks for posting this info. I never realized they were that cost prohibitive when new since they were somewhat before my time. I also never knew about the connection to Arnold Jacobs but the scarcity makes sense now. I have no doubt the ones you put together will be fantastic. Two reasons that you ...

Re: Holton 345 info seeking

The current lack of 345s on the market should tell you how easy they are to find. There are probably still a few serving time in school band rooms, but they never sold as well as Conn and King tubas for band usage. They do show up from time to time, but it is infrequent. And yes, a lot of them were ...

Re: Discussion of tuba sizing

Why not measure from the end of the bell but from the center point straight down by the same amount on both tubas then measure the bell circumference at that point. In my mind I’m thinking 18” on a B flat vs 16” on a C tuba since we know C tubas tend to have a faster expansion rate. That's about wha ...

Re: Discussion of tuba sizing

Here’s my idea for a way to measure better especially when comparing short bell horns to longer bell horns. Why not measure from the end of the bell but from the center point straight down by the same amount on both tubas then measure the bell circumference at that point. In my mind I’m thinking 18” ...

Holton 345 info seeking

Hello all, I was wondering if folks who own or have owned a 345 in b flat specifically could share some knowledge to these questions: 1 How hard are the Bb ones to find? And what should one expect to pay for one that plays well but doesn’t have to look pretty? 2 How manageable is intonation (again s ...

Re: BBb or CC

In the military I played both but on a CC my low range suffers and on a BBb my high range suffers. I think my ideal is a large BBb and a German style F. Gotta save $ to make that happen.
