Re: glut

The best thing any young and able musician can do is decide (realise) that music is for their recreation and not a way of earning money. Learn a trade, get a (paying) profession but don’t get involved in music and if you do then teach others to a level were they can play for their own pleasure. ...

new Heckel bassoon (current pricing for those who have been on the wait list) - $70,000 wait list length: 16 years Insane. Re: Flying with a Tuba

Mark and Rick bring up some valid concerns, and these were things we thought about before we even booked. We just made a couple of ground rules that we agreed to: 1) The tuba does NOT go through the TSA scanner. It must be hand checked. If they want to try to be tough and make us wait a couple of ...

Re: Flying with a Tuba

I travel a lot, and when I buy airline tickets, I have to produce a birthdate, ect for the 2nd passenger. How do you designate "inanimate object" when buying an extra ticket? My wife, bless her heart, was the one that did the booking. She had to call the airline and let them know what the ticket ...

Flying with a Tuba

A number of months ago I asked the forum about the best tuba flight case available, and was in essence told “there isn’t a flight case made that can’t be damaged.” I also asked about flying with a tuba in general and was told “don’t do it, just drive or borrow a horn at your destination.” I respect t ...

Re: Roger Bobo's new authorized biography: "Love Songs & Pirate Songs"

As someone who has read the book, it’s definitely worth buying. It gives an interesting window into the triumphs, tragedies, and frustrations that the maestro has had over the years. I was especially irked by (but not surprised by) the lack of respect he gets from some outside the tuba community b ...

Air Travel Advice

Awhile back I asked about case recommendations for my son’s trip to NYC this summer. We decided to just go with a gig bag and purchase a second plane ticket for the horn. With that, I wanted to get some words of advice from those in the know regarding navigating with a tuba through airport security, ...

Re: nature vs. nurture

I think extreme natural talent is required to reach the very top of musical achievement, but given the choice, I’d still choose hard work over innate talent any day.

Wiseman Cases

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with Wiseman tuba cases? My son’s going to be schlepping around NYC for a time this summer (not to mention the flight there and back) with his horn. He likes the idea of being able to “backpack” it while navigating the sidewalks versus using a wheeled cas ...

Re: Minn. CL: B&S 3100W

I have this sneaking suspicion that there is no “other guy”. Here’s how my conversation went with them… Me: “Is the tuba still available?” Pawn: “No, it’s been sold, but we’re getting another one in that’s really similar, but more expensive” Me: “Um, yeah, sure. Bye.” They’re just pulling it and maki ...

Got the “all clear” from the Burnsville PD, called the pawn shop and was told that it had sold. Sigh. :facepalm2:

I called the Burnsville police to see if they had any reports of stolen tubas. They were going to call the pawn shop and investigate.

Flight Cases

I may have to take a tuba on a flight, and quite frankly the thought really scares me. I’ve heard the horror stories, and I’d be devastated (and my wallet would too) if this pretty horn got busted up. I’ve been taking a look at Wiseman and Accord flight cases. Very spendy, but if they’re as strong as ...

Re: Best Silver Polish?

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I decided to try Tarni-Shield and finally got around to shining up the horn today. Although it smells a bit funky, it is easy to apply and remove. And most importantly, the results look pretty spectacular!

Best Silver Polish?

Looking to shine up a moderately tarnished horn, so... What silver polish is best for: 1) Results 2) Ease of application/removal 3) Not overly abrasive to the silver plate 4) Not going to send me to the hospital from nasty fumes I’m sure there are other factors I’m not taking into consideration, so p ...

As contrabassoonists go, Susan Nigro is about as close as you’re going to come to a “household name”.

Slowing/Preventing Silver Tarnish

There have been plenty of discussions in the past about which products work best for removing silver tarnish, but are there any ways to slow or prevent tarnish in the first place? My son has a beautiful silver horn. There are no issues with tarnishing on the outer bows or bell, but the interior ...
