Re: New to doubling on Baritone

... What I found most challenging is that I'm filling a different voice in the group listening to and countering my home base. It's strange. ... I'm playing trombone this cycle, and I love getting to play inside the chords rather than (almost) always under them. It's fresh and fun. And that's just ...

Re: bloke's (rude as hell) selling tips

Players who are sponsored by makers will sell instruments if they change sponsors. In that case, the one they are selling is the best example they could get of that model while they were playing it. I have a wonderful tuba thanks to the previous owner being a sponsored artist. Lucky me ...

Oboe literature on F tuba. Sits incredibly well.
Just taken down two octaves? Or played with "trumpet fingerings" so oboe C4 is tuba F2?

This is still available.

I'm mostly not interested in tuba trades, but a good solid F-attachment trombone or nice Symphonie F tuba might work.

Somebody should buy this so I stop being tempted. And I should buy a trombone first, anyway.

For anyone in the U.S. interested in this, TheBerlinerTuba makes the shipping very convenient.

You're saying 102 because it's too old to be a 3103? For that age, how do you tell between 102 and 103?

Re: Minnesota CL: vintage 5v Miraphone 186 BBb outfit $3k

Wow. That looks cool, with seemingly a great price.

I have a similar size B&S Bb tuba from about that era, and I've been surprised how much I appreciate having a 5th valve -- more than I expected to when I got it.

Re: Trombone doubler question: flat 5th partials?

Thanks! Now that I've looked elsewhere, there's plenty of advice to leave some extra room for the D and to expect F... to be sharp. Last time I cared was in high school, and it's certainly possible that the centimeter difference one way or the other just wasn't that important to me then. This also ...

Trombone doubler question: flat 5th partials?

My community band needs trombones, at least for a couple months, so I'm filling in. It's been years since I picked up a trombone for more than a few minutes at a time, so I'm working to get back adequate range and slide technique. And now I'm paying enough attention to notice that my trombone has ...

Re: maybe (??), just save up for a real Miraphone

My Miraphone is 40 years old (so somebody else saved up for it, I guess), and the rotors are quiet. Same for the two 40 year old B&S tubas, though, so maybe it's not just Miraphones.

Re: Temporarily switching from BBb to Eb

As for Eb treble clef, some make the transition seamlessly and others for some reason cannot change the key signature in their heads, nor interpret natural signs as flats or sharp signs as naturals, on three notes. I enlightened one confused fellow in about three minutes a few years ago, and know ...

These look fun. They're also loads better than just playing two parts from the Salvation Army mix-and-match Christmas songs set. I think I still have your paypal around here somewhere.... ... You have, of course, checked that the community band uses bass clef (rather than transposed treble clef) for its Tuba parts … Is it true that brass bands will most likely use Eb treble clef parts, but that a wind ensemble might use bass clef? Either way, it should be easy enough to transpose, ...

Re: EDUCATE ME! (ECB632)

I can't say anything about the Eastmans, but the last time I tried a '70s CC 186 it was so delightfully light and easy that it left an impression. So I'll be watching for the sale (which I shouldn't, since I have a perfectly fine old 188, but, ... you know how it is).

Tell me next time you're in Austin and I'll bring it by for you to try out. It has a bigger, deeper sound than the 186 (besides being easier to hold standing up).
