Re: I hate tuba mutes....

I whole-heartedly agree, but has anyone devised (...I dunno--velcro-on corks in different sizes?) a simple and quick way to fit your small H&B into horns of different bell sizes? Does it work? Does it affect the muted sound in any way? (FWIW, I think that a good muted tuba sound should be sort of ...

Re: Synthetic valve oils

In response to Monster oil being real--yes, it is. It's made by a couple of guys currently serving in/recently separated from the USCGA band. I think that they've worked with a Coast Guard engineer or chemist to develop a corrosion-inhibiting valve oil. I'm not a shill; just an environmental ...

Re: CHEAP headphones for listening to tuba on phone/laptop

Koss Porta Pro on Amazon. The look says "I got these in the '80s" but the sound is clean, not bass-heavy, but they're open--no isolation from ambient sounds. The earpads are replacable (Yaxi earpads) and if you're like me and missing some of your high range, you can cut a dime-sized hole in the ...

Re: Another odd mouthpiece.

I have the TU13 version. It really lightens up the sound of my YFB-822, just like the staff member (I'm sorry that I can't remember his name, because he was extremely helpful, patient, and kind) suggested. I recommend it for anyone considering ditching their 822 or other what could be considered ...

Re: more on: traditions (a topic that seems to trigger, and which many seem to detest)

I suppose my sportswear analogy was that (1) times change and fashions change, and (2) people wore what they had in the closet. If people feel like they need to dress up—possibly into clothes that they have no other use for—to go to a concert they may avail themselves of one of the many ent ...

Re: more on: traditions (a topic that seems to trigger, and which many seem to detest)

I’ve been on both sides of that discussion at one time or another. Seems like the “dress up” for it argument hinges on tradition as you said, but also on the “special-ness” of the event. I think that going to a live concert event is a unique type of event. Think pop music—the mosh pit crowd looks mor ...

Re: WTT - Firstborn Child for Original Willson/Kurath Ginormous Thumb Ring

If you've got a band saw, I've got a 24AW that may have finally found its purpose in life...

Seriously, that thumb ring looks to be the size of a mouthpiece visualizer. Maybe you can sacrifice a beater rim and fab a rather unique thumb ring.

Sony MDR-7506. Mostly "flat" with a bit of a bump in the high range. Under $90.

Re: Tuning jiggers

Wow! That'd be so easy. And, you could use sulfur hexafluoride https://youtu.be/HFb4EfaViCE (sounds terrible, but is used as a gas tracer to measure mixing in room air) to lower the pitch. Problem is, you'd now be responsible for releasing a THIRD greenhouse gas in addition to CO2 and water vapor ...

Re: I miss T.U.B.A

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed reading through those journals until I was digging through some old boxes of stuph and found a cache of 10 years or so of journals from back in the mid 80's to mid 90's (before and after the name change). It's probably been another 10 years since I leafed through ...
