Re: jazz trio job in a small town...

Yep! It’s been a minute! Like maybe 15-20 years. I did run across your group on a search, but thought it was different enough and far enough away that I went with the name anyway. We have a good time and people like it, but a hard sell to book, as I knew it would be.

The Corsair is on the program this week, first time bringing out the f since Verdi requiem last year. So maybe once a year plus quintet church gigs 5-8 per year. Playing and enjoying more sousaphone these days.

Re: jazz trio job in a small town...

I started my own group with a jazz trumpet friend. Played with iReal pro for a while, now have a guitar/banjo,player( thanks to Tim Jackson for the sousaphone). People like it but still tough sledding to book gigs. But like Bloke said, no counting rests here! Tired after playing, singing, and ...

Re: Something important that has become lost due to wide recording dispersion

I’ve also gone to rotary b flat. Our reference recording had me sounding too poofy and diffuse. A lot of oooo, ooooo, ooooo. It was an Eastman 836, which I did love many things about. I can now “come forward “ in the mix when I want or sit back into the blend. I am a part time player and part time ...

Re: Willson Q-series F tuba at Dillon, $5,895

I played the smaller one at itec in Knoxville . My thoughts were” this thing is fun and easy to get around on, but might need a main slide stick”. I would be interested in a q-series version.

That whole supply and demand thing- not in the musicians favor. Get yourself a well paying, hopefully satisfying, day job and play on the side.

Re: Tuba Intonation - Rant

My understanding is that the physics just isn’t there for a brass instrument to play in tune(which is an ever moving target- key of music, other musicians, weather, etc). Best you can do is find one with reasonable solutions. My f has a simple main tuning slide stick and a long main slide. I spent 3 ...

Re: My 2¢ worth

Per service orchestra audition committees can just be the conductor. Non union and no real rules. Full time orchestras,I assume, have more guidelines.

Side hustle vs hobby

Another recent thread got me to thinking. At what percentage of a person’s income would you consider playing music for pay a job vs hobby? When you consider taxes, especially if your main job has you in a higher tax bracket, both sides of social security contribution,etc..I’m gonna guess the pay has ...

Re: My 2¢ worth

When it comes to orchestras, supply and demand is just simply against the musicians. Too many players for the jobs. Every audition for a 3-4,000 a year gig- master’s and doctorates lined up around the block.

Re: more annoying "so what if 99% of people disagree with me?" bloke opinions

I’ve got the same Schmidt euphonium bloke has, minus some slide lengthening he did to his. He gave me the tubes but I never had the work done. I was hoping to use it on some high orchestral solos, but never did. Anyone want it?

Re: Eastman EBB825VG BBb-Tuba - Soundcheck

Anyone know if these have vented valves?

I asked Eastman about this and they said their rotors have a ‘slot’ or something built in that works like a vent.
Not sure I understand what happens - if the casing isn’t vented, where/how is the change in pressure being dissipated?
Anyone have real ...

Re: Eastman EBB825VG BBb-Tuba - Soundcheck

Had mine since January 2024. All good. Love it. I pull no slides and I’ve always been a slide puller before this horn. 3 for 1+2 on a few notes. 235 for low b and e.97% of water comes out the main slide water key. Total happy. I don’t own a c anymore.
