Re: FS: Miraphone(?) 186-sized 3v BBb $450

After loaning this tuba out for several months, it is available again. And seven months later, I've gained some skills that I wouldn't be afraid to use on this thing to get it looking a little bit better.

$450 plus shipping (likely expensive, tall tuba) or pick up in CT.

Re: first piece played in a band concert - POLL !!!

Marches are pretty classic. This concert I'm having next week, my band is actually opening with "Suite Francaise." I think the most important thing is that openers be tuneful and engaging. I like the idea of a zippy circus march encore. But if it's the end of an outdoor summer concert, you better ...

Probably the nicest example of a mid-century Besson/B&H I've ever seen. I guess that tracks, considering the provenance.

Re: At least $1,000 less than the Jinbao sort-of-like-it

There were two distinctly different versions of the piston 2155. The one that, to me, is MUCH more desirable is the version wrapped like the 2000 (the first version of the piston 2155 was not wrapped the same as the 2000…). This one in the eBay ad Joe posted is the later wrap. That's interesting, I ...

Re: At least $1,000 less than the Jinbao sort-of-like-it

https://i.imgur.com/hIiBGI8.jpg I don't think the Thor was based on the piston 2155, but rather the ill-fated 2155 R . Having played several Thors (yes, including Joe's slicked out model), several 2155s and a single 2155R, the Thor's "footprint," especially the bell, seemed to be based on the ...

recent goings-on at Bean Hill

Trying to keep track of all the things going on here, and I thought someone might be interested to see what all's in the works: Alex 163 CC - All this really needs is a shorter 5th valve slide and a better gig bag and it'll be ready to go. - Down the line, minibal/unibal conversion with conventional ...

Re: Help with F tuba (Wiener System/Vienna System)

Hey, I also owned a Vienna-system Alex F for a while. Welcome to the club! The issues you are describing are not so much related to the Vienna system but moreso German-style F tubas in general. The lower range (on my current Alex F, around Eb below the staff down to B below the staff) is a bit fussy ...

Re: new tuba: Alexander 164 kaiser BBb

With a Ferree’s roller and various other low-tech tools, I have gotten the bell flattened out to around a B/B+ level, which is okay for me right now. I can’t really put this thing down. It’s a lot of fun to play. Intonation… the fifth partial is about the same as my 163, which is approximately 40¢ fl ...

Re: new tuba: Alexander 164 kaiser BBb

These valves are pretty quiet. The noisiest part was the piece of old hard electrical tape being used as a makeshift bumper. I just aligned them and put new neoprene bumpers in this evening. There is no play in the linkages or any up-down play in the rotors. I’ve been getting acquainted with it t ...

Re: Sanders Artist?

Here’s a comparison pic. Yours is missing the fifth valve, obviously, which defines a different wrap for the first valve tubing, but I’m 99% sure that’s what it is.

Re: Sanders Artist?

Looks like a Cerveny 686 in CC to me. Sanders was used as a stencil brand for Cerveny. A BBb would have a longer lead pipe and dogleg after the valves. To my eye, at least.

The linkages are post-1990s ball-and-socket Cerveny parts. Again, to my eye.

new tuba: Alexander 164 kaiser BBb

This arrived in the mail from Europe slightly worse for wear. The bell (which was pristine) got badly crumpled, but I was able to smooth it out best I could during my lunch break today (no rips, and the kranz held together!). Definitely needs more going-over. I also knew this when going in, but the ...

A Walter Nirschl and a Holton 345 in CC. But I missed out on both.

I sold the Cimbasso though! So maybe I'll catch the next big fish.
There is that Hirsbrunner 6/4 CC for sale in AZ listed on the Offsite Deals section of this website.
