Re: Slide Lubricants
The only real solution - to avoid grease migrating into valve oil (which is probably the cause of the overwhelming number of complaints about various brands of valve oil, whereas the oils themselves are likely innocent whipping boys) - is to perfectly align slides - both parallel and coplanar, and ...

Your favorite music stand?
What is your favorite music stand? I guess we all have broad experience from this arena, ranging from the flimsiest 2$ stand to the sturdy, german-built rock-solid holder for your precious music sheets. My favorite, for the time being, is the K & M 10065 stand, built in Germany, with u-profile legs ...

Re: That pesky CC intonation again
Thank you. I use the 2+5 with the 5th slide pulled out, it is a bit sharp but lippable. Maybe 1+5 is better, I will give it a try :)Mark Horne wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 2:45 pm If the 2-3 Eb is way too flat, have you tried it with 1-5 with the 5th slide pulled out? Better than cutting slides if you can avoid it.

Re: That pesky CC intonation again
Thanks for all your input. I think tube surgery will be the best solution, but will try other remedies first, like practicing long tones etc. Hope you all have resumed regular tuba playing, and that the infamous c-virus has been eradicated from your rehearsal rooms and concert halls.

Re: That pesky CC intonation again
Do you primarily play your CC or Eb? I ask because the note you’re having issues with on CC is open on Eb, which can sometimes throw off the chops. A somewhat similar problem will occur on F tuba for people that primarily play CC. Not saying the horn isn’t off, but I’d probably have someone else, ho ...

That pesky CC intonation again
I have been in direct touch with his Blokeness regarding this, but would like the views from this excellent community as well. Instrument being the JP379CC "Sterling", a 4/4 horn with 4+1 valves (4 piston + 1 rotary). And yes, this is another intonation issue, where Eb with 2+3 below the staff is ...

Re: What is the Best EEb?
Being a norwegian, my answer should be "Norwegian star", but I have never played one, so I would not know. However, the maker/inspirator of this fine instrument, Øystein Baadsvik, is a great teacher and inspirator, and his classes and master classes are great, even for seasoned tubists, I should ...

Re: Besson Eb compensators...
Yes, all parts for brass band are transposed, and both the Eb and the Bb tuba play their parts in treble clef notation. I think the part for the bass trombone is in bass clef/concert pitch, but that is the only exception. I do not have access to the tuba right now, but based on a quick google search ...

Re: Besson Eb compensators...
I see a lot of Besson Eb compensating tubas around. They seem to be widely used in the UK and maybe Europe in general. Some are Sovereigns and are a bit pricey and others are Imperial are quite a bit less so. (And maybe there are others.) Most of the ones I see are 3+1 compensators. Bell range from ...

Re: up for debate
Over the many decades, brasswind instrument players have argued that thicker/thinner instruments and heavier/lighter instruments project more/less. We're neither percussionists nor stringed instrument players. Rather, we are sympathetically-activated air-column vibrators ...and it's not even about ...

Re: What Do Tubists Use In Different Countries?
The Eb and Bb is the most common among amateur musicians in Norway, I guess. I play a Cc myself, but I am a rare species. In the professional bands I guess it's a mixture between Cc and Bb.

Re: How many tubas (+others) do you regularly play?
Only two, I'm afraid:
One Cc JP for my concert band rehearsal and performances
One Eb Besson for my brass band rehearsal and performances
Same mouthpiece, though ;) Helleberg 120S.

The horn was bought new, and has been used for two years in a concert band, and has no significant wear or tear, apart for some minor dings. Valves has been overhauled by technician and ...

Re: Gard bags
I believe an issue has been that - when length and bell diameter are accurate - "body girth" (nor "these popular models fit this bag:" are not listed, and the "girth" - sometimes, with this make - is a bit stingy for common models. ...no negative comments whatsoever regarding quality of ...

Re: Favorite Valve oil for pistons?
I have used UltraPure, Bluejuice and Hetmann, and are using Hetmann now, mainly because my local music shop have it in stock. But this are also good lubcricants, I think, with no. 1 being the light version for the new JP and no 2 for my old Besson with a wee bit more clearance in the piston area.

Gard bags
Hiya folks, I am happy to recommend Gard Bags for your horn. They are solid, can be padded on the inside for extra protection and are quite comfortable to wear. Not too pricey either - I would say in the range of the Goetz Supersac, but far below the Chronkite. I paid €350 for my latest Gard bag, ...
