lap tuning slides

Many, many years ago, I used automobile finish rubbing compound to lap some slides. It worked nicely. You have to be able to judge when to stop, wash everything out, and see what you have. You either stop at that point or go again. What method do you use and why?

Reynolds Contempora Question

Maybe someone here has experience with this horn. Reynolds Contempora BBb bass. How does this " tuning compensation double-action trigger on first valve slide" work? Does it return the slide to a fixed position Does it return the slide to "all the way in" after pulling for sharp notes? Does the ...

Re: Sometimes it's the horn's fault

For whatever a person might think about his command of the instrument, I have learned not to ever take a good instrument for granted. I was verbalizing different ways for a student to smooth up his playing on a passage one day. After numerous attempts without success, I grabbed his school horn and ...

Re: What makes the sound?

I have not gone down this road of chat lately because it seemed most folks around here were resistant to such ideas. First, I say, it's not about which way you think, it's about what can be gained from the journey of exploration into all ideas. Here's something I saved years ago: To Buzz or Not to ...

Re: Vintage 185 Mirafone outcome

Well, I finally have my 1960 Miraphone 186 CC 5U back in Pensacola and sitting beside the 50s BBb 4U I recently acquired. Surprisingly it is the same bore as the 186 CC, almost identical layout and same 16 1/2 inch bell. The tuning slides are interchangeable. I guess I thought is was a 185 because ...

James Husser Tuba?

Did anyone here know this guy James Husser? I ended up with his very nice late 50s 186 Miraphone BBb tuba and an amazing Wenzl B Wilfer upright bass. I finally found info on the owner. I'm thinking he bought both instruments while in Germany in the 50s while stationed there since his obit says he ...

Holton sousaphone Neck & Bits

I found this at a music store and was told it was "new" old stock. It was unused when I received it and I plugged it in maybe twice. Notice the heavier brace & substantial guard bead across the top side. The newer replacements are much more scaled down. Brass lacquer. May be a little darker than a ...

JW York finish options

Just wondering what finish options were offered on York tubas 1900-1930?
My York engraving does not show traces of satin within the engraving. The horn was silver at one time but is now bare brass. I don't see traces of satin.
So, was brite silver finish offered during that time frame?

Re: Ya know ....

I think I read somewhere in a discussion concerning double peddle C (like in Kraft Encounters) that Tony easily popped out that note at a clinic. If so, what is your approach or technique?

Re: POLL !!! - pebble finish sousaphone

i like my horn to look old- primarily brass band & vintage jazz gigs on this horn.
The faux finish is with rust-oleum. The hand-hammered colors. I spay two colors at once and blend with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.

Re: Thoughts on this lathe?

I have an Atlas/Craftsman 101 6". It's fun to learn on and fiddle around on, but once you get going, you'll want something larger. I just bought a South Bend 10". The cost depends on what part of the country you're in. I paid $2100 for the SB, but you may find one for around $1500. I paid two movers ...

Re: something that might (??) improve high range accuracy

Well... this reminds me I need to clean every horn I own. :(
What method was mentioned a few months ago - best cleaner for green lime build up? I have acquired a horn that was not played for 10-12 years. When I finally got the slides off, the brass interior was solid green.

Re: WTB - Miraphone 184 BBb

I have a miraphone BBb late 50s vintage. 4 rotors. I think it is a 185, but it could be a 184. I have plans to sell it, but I need some time to figure out what it is. It has been lacquered and is in great playing condition.

Thank you so much, Eric. This is just the info I needed. I got a look today. It's in great condition and owned by a retired engineer who takes very good care of things. 10" South Bend with a 4.5 bed. This is my chance to have a really nice lathe. I spent the summer after my freshman year working in ...

Serenade for Tuba & Piano

Is anyone familiar with this piece: Serenade for Tuba and Piano by William Schmidt I just acquired a stack of music and thought this looked interesting.
