Re: CHEAP headphones for listening to tuba on phone/laptop
Second for the Audio Technica MX50s. Clean & neutral, nothing overly boosted, comfortable. They can be found on ebay in this price range or you can get the 30s factory refurbished for $50.

Re: DCI/DCA
What I would rather see is more local mini-corps scenes in place of a national one. I feel like that would be a better fit for the more casual nature of those groups. Yeah, it would be great, and those of us in the activity have been saying as much for years. The problem is people don't really seem ...

Re: DCI/DCA
Yeah, DCA no longer had the means to support itself. The arrangement is technically only for 2 years, but I have my doubts about DCA ever returning... As for mini corps, I heard they were working on a version of the DCA I&E competition, where the mini corps championship competition was held, but ...

WTB: Tama by Kanstul contra
Probably the longest of long shots at this point, but if anyone was ever considering parting with their Model 200/3 or 201 Tama by Kanstul contra, I would be incredibly interesting it talking with you about that. Not particularly interested in any of the 202 series or any convertible versions. Even ...

Re: Best way to record video and audio?
I am not super familiar with Logic, but I would just use that to get the audio sounding just as you would like it, then using a separate video editor (I've used ShotCut which is free) for the video and replacing the audio track with the file from my DAW.

Re: DCI Cadets in town
Why pick Erie, I wondered? Likely has something to do with their parent organization, Youth Education in the Arts, being HQ'd in Allentown. That, and getting away from George Hopkins' sphere of influence... it’s too bad there’s not much for someone who “ages out”. DCA all age corps are still going, ...

Re: Forum members sheet music lending library?
I'll mention too the Clarinet Institue's Tuba archives. They may not have what you're looking for, but the rep lists are on their site and they have hundreds of tuba solo lit as well as quartet/quintet archives for very reasonable prices. ISMLP can take a while to dig through, but I've found things ...

Re: Convertible tuba posture help
Haven't marched with a convertible since high school but if memory serves correctly there really is not much to be done about the horrible ergonomics of those horns. You can adjust the lead pipe a bit to try and get a more comfortable wrist angle, but ultimately they suffer from the same problem of ...

Re: Tuba-euphonium ensemble rep
The Clarinet Institue of Los Angeles has a Tuba music archive that is focused on solo lit, but has quite a few tuba/euph quartets included as well: https://www.clarinetinstitute.com/store/p130/Tuba_Sheet_Music_-_2_Archives.html They also have a brass quintet archive that includes quite a few ...

Re: Wessex Viverna Large BBb
I really like my Viverna. I played a Yamaha 641 for a long time so I am still getting used to the way it responds in an ensemble, but the valves are quick, intonation is pretty even and accessible across the whole range, and it's pretty comfortable to hold. Previous poster is right, it does seem ...

Re: ebay: King contra-style 4v marching tuba
You dont' have to wonder about the ergonomics, they are even worse that it looks. the weight is centered all wrong, there are very few good places to grab it, and the 4th valve isn't angled right; you have to push it in with your whole arm as the valve is angled up instead of down away from you ...

Re: Another rant. This time staccato
I am probably late to the party here, but Staccato is most certainly an articulation. Articulation refers to how the note is sounded and includes factors like length, attack, shape, decay, release... By this definition, where articulation ONLY refers to the very beginning of a note (what I would ...

Re: Microphone options
I mean, if a Large Diaphragm Condenser is good enough for Baadsvik, it must be good enough for us regular folks, right?? I use an sE X1A Large Diaphragm Condenser mic and I am always pleased with the results. My space isn't the best (small), so I usually mic my horn pretty close with a 10dB pad ...
