Re: Rochester, MN TubaChristmas -- Sat 12/14
That was fun! Best time I've had at a TubaChristmas in years. :tuba: Frank and Ron -- great to see you both again. Jim -- great to finally meet you in person after chatting for how-many years. Our drive home was fine, but we drove past a few bad accidents. The worst part for me was that I slipped ...

Re: Rochester, MN TubaChristmas -- Sat 12/14
Was so great to meet all you guys in person. I don’t have much of any connection to Minnesota other than my job. Nice to connect with people even if it’s once a year.

Re: for those pursuing performance degrees
The people who fly the large international sized airplanes are now making $500 per flight hour. Takes about $100000 to get a commercial pilots license. Two years and about $40000 will get you an aircraft maintenance technician license. The major airlines are paying them well over $100k and there is ...

Re: FS: Miraphone Norwegian Star
Yeah trying to do Bbb/CC/Eb has finally gotten too much for my 54 year old brain I played mostly CC and Eb. That was not terrible but when I tried transposing BBb brass band treble parts to sub in my group with my CC it was very hard. I only play Eb now but if I ever went back to a contra it would ...

Re: Anybody doing Rochester MN TubaChristmas tomorrow?
Yes,
Had a really good one years ago and I let it go. This one had some miles on her but it’s playing pretty good now.

Re: Anybody doing Rochester MN TubaChristmas tomorrow?
Thanks, I had one of this same model which was a better player than this one. Martin Wilk did a pretty amazing job getting it to play modern pitch. There are still some tricky notes to play in tune similar to many vintage Eb tubas but it is at least manageable now. I played it before he did anything ...

Re: Anybody doing Rochester MN TubaChristmas tomorrow?
Yeah an hour and a half. We’re in Minnetonka. My wife and daughter enjoyed shopping at the mall during rehearsal so we may be back there next year. I may bring my tuba next year. The sousaphone is fun but nice to play a modern instrument sometimes too.

Re: Anybody doing Rochester MN TubaChristmas tomorrow?
Sorry I didn’t see this. I was the lone sousaphone today. A drive for me compared to Minneapolis but was fun.

Re: Which make is "the Mercedes Benz of Tubas" ?
I played one a friend owned. The 5 rotor composite rotor model. I liked the sound better than my PT4 rotor but I liked playing my pt4 better and it still sounded pretty good.

Re: Which make is "the Mercedes Benz of Tubas" ?
Never heard that term regarding tubas. Back in the early to mid 80s my teacher at the time referred to HB as the “Rolls Royce” of tubas. He talked my parents into buying me a used Conn 3J. I wish I still had that tuba.

Re: BBC tuba rest
BBC playing stands are the gold standard. I have a DEG one and I find it to be a little clunky and awkward. The spring-loaded BBC mechanisms are really nice. I was on a wait list for a long time. So long that I forgot about it and they called me out of the blue and asked if I still wanted one. I ...

Re: BBC tuba rest
Is this what you are talking about? https://www.baltimorebrasscompany.com/images/product/large/ae00-2487.jpg Pretty neat idea. I would think that with a table saw and a router, a person could crank them out for next to nothing. They'd make great tuba Christmas gifts! No it’s a playing rest I should ...

BBC tuba rest
Just received my BBC tuba rest today. By far the nicest one I’ve seen. I tried to buy one of these maybe a year ago. They said at the time they would not be making anymore. Got a phone call out of the blue asking if I still wanted one. So happy I was able to get one. Anyone still wanting one I would ...

I think I may have coined the term fantasy sale or fantasy purchase here, unless that's something that's long been established and defined as a thing. I actually was the one who defined it, I'm complimented that someone else picked it up on it and used it. More than once or twice, I've had people ...

Re: Question about the future of Willson tubas
And he did that without having his hand in the bell? Sound like that tuba had your basic "low C on a rotary F" all the way up the scale -- you make it play what you want because it doesn't actually WANT to play ANY note. It was incredible, he just played the notes he wanted to play, valves be ...

Re: Question about the future of Willson tubas
I don't remember if I played the small F but the small Eb was really a charming instrument to play, it still sounded like a smaller version of the big Eb though. I saw Marty play an Eb scale on the big one (2nd to 4th partial) without using any valves. [emoji50] And he did that without having his ...
