Re: Practicing and using false tones
My undergrad professor forced us to always use false tones in the low register. At the time I hated it. But now, I have come to realize the value of being able to play them well. I feel being able to center them with a good sound makes the regular fingerings far more stable and it gives me another ...

Re: Assessing when to take the day off
I wouldn’t say I’ve ever taken a day off because I still felt warmed up the next day. In fact, usually those are my favorite practice days as things usually “feel” good. I do take time off if my lips feel stiff and like they can’t function. Usually the next day that issue is fixed. I also try to take ...

Re: Mouthpiece questions/experiences/etc.
Opening span. I need about 30 and 1/2. The two I am using: Wick 5L 30.4 JK 8C 30.5 The PT64 that I used so much in the past, clearly is too wide compared to what I can do with the narrower ones, as is the 7B that I have used in the past on the 183 for typical oompah (like in the video I posted of ...

Recovering from sickness
For the past 2 1/2 weeks I’ve been dealing with a horrible respiratory infection. This is the most time I’ve taken off in at least a few years. My face feels terrible and my chops are not 100% yet. I play quite a lot of gigs starting next month and through the summer so I’m trying to get back in the ...

If you make some plain ol ground beef tacos. Chop up some bacon and cook it with it. Your tummy and taste buds will thank me. Your heart not so much

Vurl Bland out of Texas is a phenomenal player. I loved my time studying with him. Genuinely great human being.

Re: The most commonly used tuba in the US today?
The most common tubas I see around here are all Eastmans. Most of the HS’s around here are buying 534s. The 632 is the most popular among CC tubas followed closely by the 836 6/4. I’m happy with my Hirsbrunner.

Schlipf practice mute for HB-2P
Was wondering if anyone knew what size Schlipf practice mute would fit in a Hirsbrunner HB-2P? I was thinking either a 4 or a 5 from the descriptions on Thomann music however I’m not sure.

They’ve been redesigning those bags for years now. I wouldn’t hold out hope that they’re coming back. They were subpar products for the price in my opinion anyway.

Bobo mouthpieces
Can anyone share their thoughts on the Volare BT-01F, Giddings Hawk and Yamaha Roger Bobo Solo. I’m mostly interested to hear how the Giddings compares to the others but all info would be appreciated. I know a couple of these are pretty rare to find state side at the moment.

Cronkhite bag question
I’m going to be purchasing a Cronkhite bag for my HB-1P very soon and was looking at their website they have an HB-2 option listed in their pre-measured bags but not an HB-2P. Would the same bag fit both horns? I know it would be tall and wide enough, but would the depth be the same?
