Re: charts, graphs, and things at which I tend to look askance
The Lafreque is pretty obnoxiously marketed in such a way that it seems like snake oil. If all they said was "adding mass to key spots on an instrument affects things, here's a thing to add mass to a key spot on an instrument", people would get what they're actually about. It's not magic, it's not ...

Re: Valve Blather a la Finetales
^ I believe that spreadsheet was on Art Hovey's website. http://galvanizedjazz.com/tuba.html That's the one! My current alternate for open low F is 56-134, which is dead on and very easy to control. I imagine that 7-134 or somesuch would work well, too. With the 7th valve, 13467 is the most in-tune ...

Re: Valve Blather a la Finetales
Now THIS is the content I crave! Your realization about the function of long 5th (or later) vales can be put a simple way: they are all tuned to the 4th valve. The flat whole step 5th valve on a 6-valve F tuba is an in-tune 1st valve in C. The flat half step 6th valve on a 6-valve F tuba is an in ...

Re: 3-Valve Compensating Modification Theory
It might be interesting to collect all of the different ways you could make a parts horn fully chromatic and how much work each method would be based on the different valve sets you have at your disposal. 3-valve piston sets, 4-valve piston sets, 3v compensating sets, 2 piston valves (from a G ...

Re: Kanstul marching brass
I don't know if you've ever encountered them, but Kurath (Willson) also made some F instruments which they marketed as mellophones in the United States through DEG, and featured two sizes of bells (either at the same time, or likely starting out with the smaller bell and later going to the larger ...

Re: Kanstul marching brass
Marching brass was Kanstul's bread and butter. Zig was making G bugles before the company Kanstul started, and once Kanstul started with those they branched out to Bb/F marching brass. The concert stuff came later, but marching instruments was where Zig really shined. Kanstul's 3-valve G bugles ...

Re: more annoying "so what if 99% of people disagree with me?" bloke opinions
Euphonium is easy. It's one of those things that a few players will insist against but most people understand that it's true, just like the saxophone. Furthermore, it is my opinion that euphonium solo repertoire is so much more difficult/virtuosic than any other brass repertoire (except for a few ...

Re: m̸o̸r̸o̸n̸ more on video game symphony orchestra concerts
Anime orchestra concerts are similar. I recently played on a concert with the music of One Piece, with the show playing behind us as we played the tracks. The concert was in a massive theater as part of the annual anime convention here. It was packed, and there was indeed rock concert-level roaring ...

Re: Goofing around with franken-bones
Tenon/receiver swapping is standard procedure in frankenboning. My tech is currently taking 4 King trombones of mine and making them modular, which includes putting them all on the same tenon/receiver. Since the King male connector differs from other makes in that the inside slide tube doesn't go ...

Re: King 2280 euphonium compared to Yamaha 321 euphonium
Considering you also have the big euph, I think the 321 is the clear winner. I personally don't find the 321 and the 2280 that different playability-wise, but I prefer the 321 overall and it definitely has a smaller/lighter sound. I do think the large shank conversion is worth it. To me the smaller ...

I would stretch out much farther and state (ie. beyond "suggest") that the overwhelming majority of "classical" music videos we see today were recorded... - audio first, HEAVILY edited - video second, and played along with the recorded audio, but (of course) only the pre-recorded/heavily-edited ...

Re: Olds Ultratone French Horn G bugle
I did a little more digging and found an original Olds catalog and was surprised that Olds offered both a mellophone bugle and a French horn bugle. Here is the ad below. Wonder why they did that? I do agree with the ad copy that it sounds very much horn-like. The French horn bugle was first, and ...
