That's a really cool photograph.
However, the "expert" who said it was likely from Markneukirchen was way off the mark, IMHO (I don't see a single rotary valve instrument in that picture). Those tubas and cornets (they look like the Clarke model) are definitely Holtons - they even mentioned that the photograph was from Elkhorn, Wisconsin - and if the photo was made in Elkhorn (no way of knowing that for sure) that would put the date somewhere after 1918, when they moved from Chicago.

...agree with YB...and re: "$1800 or a lot more than that"...
...so A.R. is now competing with American Pickers, re: the absurdly high "values" they're placing on stuff, then?

Re: Cool old photograph with tubas galore
I wish we could find that guy and let him know he was right about it being Elkhorn, WI.
Otherwise, a cool old photograph. I think he'd do well to get a few hundred for it.
BTW, does anyone else walk into an antique store and immediately think that 1) about 90% of this stuff is never going to sell, 2) what a shame to spend so much time to organize all of it, and 3) how do these people sell a few trinkets here and there and still pay their rent? 4) Re #3... Maybe I'm wrong about #1 and #2!!

If they are not selling on the interwebs in the back room they won't last.
Even if they own the building and do it for fun.

Re: Cool old photograph with tubas galore
I said the same thing to my wife last night when I heard the appraiser say Markneukirchen. Too many pistons for a German factory, and 1880 is way too early. Having said that........what a great picture that would be to have hanging in an office!!
Re: Cool old photograph with tubas galore
I just sent an email to the woman who appraised it. We'll see what she has to say...

While you're at it,
As her if SHE (or the appraiser) made an offer, and how much was the offer which was submitted to the owner of the photograph, please.
...or whether (as does Mike Wolfe), she is one who - on camera - claims that things which might possibly sell for $60 are "worth" $750 (etc.)
bloke "It would be fun to have a cable TV show where I drove around buying people's worthless crap for absurdly high prices."
