Gig bag or case for oddball tuba with 41.5" height and 19" bell

Post by ChrisPC »

Does anybody by chance have a gig bag or hard case with wheels for sale or trade (or a recomendation) that would fit an oddball tuba with 41.5" height and 19" bell? It's an old (70's?) East German B&S 5-rotary-valve CC tuba, an early version of the PT5 I think. I have a near mint condition two-tone (green and black) Cronkite bag, supposedly sized for the modern PT6 (but still too tight for my tuba), that I can trade. I'm new to the forum so PM's won't work for me for a while, so please reply to this post or email me at chalfant100 @ gmail.com (remove the spaces around "@"). I live in the Denver area.

More boring details you can ignore...
I have a Gard bag that works, but it's due for replacement, and I prefer side-opening to the top-opening gig bags. I tried the big Protec bag (supports 22" bell), but it was _too_ big. The bag sagged with my tuba in it, so it touched the ground when carying unless I kept my arm bent, which was a (litteral) pain. The dimensions I see for all other mass-produced side-opening gig bags are too short in one or both of the critical measurments (41.5" height and 19" bell). My experience with Cronkite turned into a Shirt-show, I won't have anything to do with them ever again, and I'm sure they same way about me. The gig bag is extremely sturdy and it looks fantastic, but there were multiple other issues.

Thanks for any form of help with this!

Messina will do custom bags if you submit measurements; have you checked with them?

Thank you very much! I haven't heard of them before, will look into them. Have you bought a gig bag from them, and how do you like it? One pet peeve of mine: I definitely want the backpack straps, but also want the bag to have a pocket or flap to hide them when not in use. Do you know if theirs have that? I just glanced at their website but don't see any pictures or detailed description of their tuba bags.

I think I just found a good option, the Ortola 225 Gig Bag Tuba at https://www.thomannmusic.com/ortola_225 ... r_tuba.htm. Anybody familiar with those? I'll hold off a while before buying anything in the hope that other great suggestions (like the one for Messina Covers) come in. Again, thanks everyone!

The Soundline 594 270 should fit very nice
it fits 106cm tall (41.7") and 48cm (18.9")

https://en.soundline-gigbags.de/_files/ ... de4f62.pdf

I have one for my kaiser B&F Amati, fits very nice and feels good. I believe I read somewhere that Soundline also produces Miraphone gigbags
but it doesn't meet your requirements of hiding the backpack straps and it is a top-loader....

I had Messina make a bag for my Eastman. The turnaround time was reasonable and the quality was very high.

It didn't have a pocket for the straps, but you could ask him if that's something they'd be able to do since you'd need something custom fit anyway.

If you can find one, what does a new, Cordura Cronkhite Kaiser bag sell for these days? As in street price after “discounts,” etc…
