for those who remember Mac Davis...

The story is that the person - who orchestrated this march for brass (last year) had played golf regularly with Mac Davis, and - decades ago, on the golf course, one day - bet Mac Davis (a nickel...?? a beer...?? a C-note...??) that Mac Davis could not compose a march.

According to the story (told us by the orchestrator) this march (melody and chord changes...perhaps a bit more...) came in the mail to him - from Mac Davis, a few weeks later.

Mac Davis passed away (just back in September) only a couple of weeks prior to this Jackson (TN) Symphony Brass Choir concert, somehow (??) the principal trombone player knew about the march - as well as it having been orchestrated in 2019, and was able to receive a score and parts in time for us to perform it...so our performance was probably (??) one of the first.

The performance is "good", but (to critical ears) not "polished".
As with the other subscription concerts - this fall, we have performed TWO concerts (to socially-distanced audiences) - both the same night, with only ONE rehearsal...so (just as with the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto "Romance" movement) this march received ONE run-though - and a couple of shoulder-shrugs - at the ONE rehearsal.

Notice how very "busy" the tuba part is. :tuba:
There are enough notes - there - to raise a BASSOON player's eyebrows... :teeth:
(I have NO idea whether Mac Davis wrote all that bass-line mess, or whether the orchestrator had drank some very strong coffee, that day...??)

<sidebars>
The bass trombone player owns a Jinbao euphonium, but decided to ask to borrow my Willson, as its low range is extraordinarily good.
The bell-front compensating E-flat tuba (seen on the floor) was used to play the unlisted encore, "Stars & Stripes Forever" - where the tuba was assigned the piccolo obbligato in the Trio. (With the E-flat tuba, the vast majority of the pitches - in that solo - only require one-or-the-other of the first two valves - or no-valves-at-all - being depressed..."best tool for the job"...etc.)
</sidebars>

Leipers Fork (misspelled on youtube) is a rural area southwest of Nashville, but still well inside Nashville's lower outer loop freeway. Mac Davis divided his time between his home - there - and another home - in California.
Mr. Davis composed several of Elvis' hits, including "Memories", "In the Ghetto", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "A Little Less Conversation".
He also composed his own hit song, "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me" (1972).
Davis also had a successful-run TV show, "The Mac Davis Show" (33 episodes - music/comedy skits/celebrity guests), which ran from 1974 - 1976.

Nice job! I had the opportunity to perform that March in Leipers Fork with the Music City Brass Ensemble. The Tuba part is fun!

At the time, we viewed "variety shows" as somewhat mindless...but - compared to the typical fare offered today - they were quite sophisticated and highbrow, were they not?

The 50s and 60s variety shows were like an evening at the Copa.

In the 70s they turned into a schlock-fest.

I wonder if the original score is available somewhere to look at the part...

Either way, good job! Always enjoy your playing.

He was a heck of a song writer and a great performer. I remember hearing "Lubbock Texas in My Rearview Mirror," "Baby, Don't Get Hooked on Me," "Hooked on Music," "You're My Bestest Friend," and "It's Hard to Be Humble" on Houston and local country radio frequently. When I got a little older, I learned he wrote a bunch of other hits (especially "In the Ghetto"), and I started to realize what a giant he was, the likes of which won't be seen or heard anytime soon. Certainly not on mainstream radio.

And what wonderful music with amazing, deep lyrics plays on local and big market Top 40 country radio today?

"I might be better on my own
I hate you blowing up my phone
I wish I never met yo' ass
Sometimes it be like that
But I'm not myself the nights you're gone
There ain't no way I'm moving on
I'm not afraid to need you bad
Sometimes it be like that
We both wanna love
We both wanna slide
We both wanna argue until we're both right
And you want a hug
I kiss you goodnight
Maybe we're both just out of our mind
You throw tantrums while I'm twisting up
No medicine is fixing us
Can't tell you why but tell you what
You got me thinking
I might be better on my own
I hate you blowing up my phone
I wish I never met yo' ass
Sometimes it be like that
But I'm not myself the nights you're gone
There ain't no way I'm moving on
I'm not afraid to need you bad (bad)
Sometimes it be like that
I cross the seas with you (ayy)
Wasn't even supposed to be with you (yeah)
Yeah, and it gets crazy in the night
I cannot sleep with you
And I could keep you nice and warm
Won't do no thinking, I'm in love
If I was to give you the world (yeah)
That's anything that you can think of (yeah)
Got too much going to be upset
I swear I'd rather be your friend
I said I'm gonna be right back
It hurts sometimes it be like that
I might be better on my own
I hate you blowing up my phone
I wish I never met yo' ass
Sometimes it be like that
But I'm not myself the nights you're gone
There ain't no way I'm moving on
I'm not afraid to need you bad (bad)
Sometimes it be like that
Sometimes when you thought you found the love of your life
Now you're thinking I'm just one of those guys leading on
I can't help when you read it wrong
Don't know why I trip on us
You put me down, I pick you up
Can't tell you why, but tell you what
You got me thinking
I might be better on my own
I hate you blowing up my phone
I wish I never met yo' ass
Sometimes it be like that
But I'm not myself the nights you're gone
There ain't no way I'm moving on
I'm not afraid to need you bad
Sometimes it be like that
Sometimes when you're falling off track
Baby, don't you leave me like that
Don't cry
'Cause we're both just out of our mind, yeah"

-OR-

"I open my eyes, reach for the phone
It don’t leave my sight since we had that fight
I get so neurotic about it baby
‘Cause I know you’re reading your phone

I wake up, I check it
I shower and I check it
I feel the buzz in my truck and I almost wreck it
I always got it on me

Every time I unlock my screen
I hope I see one of them red lipstick “I miss you” pictures

I go to sleep, I check it
In the middle of the night, I check it
I feel the buzz in my bed
And I don’t get no rest
I always got it on me"

- OR -

"You need hands, rough not soft
To come and warm you up up in that cold hayloft
Let me hold you little darling in my big strong arms
Can't get these kind of muscles anywhere but a farm
Hey, I'm a country man
A city boy can't do the things I can
I can grow my own groceries
And salt cure a ham
Hey baby, I'm a country man
I've got a jeep with camouflage seats
That way nobody sees us parked back up in these trees
Your little ipod loaded down with Hoobastank
Don't be a tape player hater girl were groovin' to Hank
Hey, I'm a country man
A city boy can't do the things I can
I can hot-wire your tractor
And plow up your land
Hey baby, I'm a country man
You like the ivy league hum-v tennis sweater type
But girl I'm here to tell you don't believe the hype
Hey, I'm a country man
I can wrestle hogs and gators with my two bare hands
Girl you better move quick
I'm in high demand
Hey baby, I'm a country man
Hey, I'm a country man
Huntin' me a good ole' country girlfriend
Why don't you come and join me
In my new deerstand
Hey baby, I'm a country man
Hey baby, I'ma country man"

- OR -

"I got that real good feel good stuff
Up under the seat of my big black jacked up truck
Rollin' on 35s
Pretty girl by my side
You got that sun tan skirt and boots
Waiting on you to look my way and scoot
Your little hot self over here
Girl hand me another beer, yeah!
All them other boys wanna wind you up and take you downtown
But you look like the kind that likes to take it way out
Out where the corn rows grow, row, row my boat
Floatin' down the Flint River, catch us up a little catfish dinner
Gonna sound like a winner, when I lay you down and love you right
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
Might sit down on my diamond plate tailgate
Put in my country rock hip-hop mixtape
Little Conway, a little T-Pain, might just make it rain
You can hang your t-shirt on a limb
Hit that bank and we can ease on in
Soak us up a little moonlight
You know I know what you like, yeah!
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
My kind of your kind of its this kind of night
We dance in the dark and your lips land on mine
Gonna get our love on
Time to get our buzz on
All them other boys wanna wind you up and take you downtown
But you look like the kind that likes to take it way out
Out where the corn rows grow, row, row my boat
Floatin' down the Flint River, catch us up a little catfish dinner
Gonna sound like a winner, when I lay you down and love you right
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
Yeah, that's my kind of night!
Come on"

"Country" music has degenerated to hip-hop lyrics + three chords.

There is some decent country music today, but it ain't on the radio. I'm particularly fond of the Derailers, Dale Watson, and Sturgill Simpson.

You should be here in Texas. Plenty to be heard and enjoyed in person and on recordings that you won’t hear on the radio.

yup...Art music (all genres) will always exist...but (yes, Bill) even much of the "classical" music (played by the pub-FM stat's, in-between their "news") is pablum. They do tend to step up the quality of their selections during fundraisers...
