For sale: Cerveny 601 BBb tuba

Post by UncleBeer »

This week one of Denton (TX) Big Brass' customers is offering a Cerveny 601 BBb tuba. This is a very large tuba with a wonderfully rich, resonant low range.

*Four rotary valves of .844" (21.45mm) bore
*Bell is 19.5" in diameter
*Lacquer approx. 25%
*No major dents

Intonation is very good, and tone is deep and colorful. Seller is asking $2,500 net. No hard case.
____________
Our customers offer their used instruments for play testing at our Denton TX Showroom.
Please email Carl@DentonBigBrass.com or message us to set up a private appointment if you are interested. Covid measures are in place for safe testing.

All instruments offered will have very recently been chem cleaned, inspected and play tested by Carl Kleinsteuber. The seller will conclude the sale with you.

so tempting. I love my CC, but I've never played the BBb version

interesting vintage. the Spatulas and engraving say "70's or 80's" but the linkage says 90's

Can't seem to find a serial number on this beast, but seller says he got it second hand at Tuba Exchange back in 1989.

I just long-term lent (or gave, maybe?) my Bb 186. We'll see how long I last before deciding I need something like this.

I wonder if that Cerveny 601 BBb is the same one that was owned and played by a former tubist in the Dallas Symphony? It was depicted in an old issue of TUBA magazine. The guy used it to record one of the Shostakovich symphonies.

That was Ev Gilmore (RIP), who routinely played Bb tuba. But I’m not familiar with the fleet he used, except that he was sponsored by Miraphone. A 601 might have served him, though. Mark might know, or Lee Hipp.

I don’t think Matt Good, his successor, ever played Bb or a 601.

Ev was a still alive in 1989, this isn't his horn. Pretty sure it must have been sold. I've been to uncle beer's shop several times, he would have mentioned it to me if it was still there.

Not Ev's Cerveny. I played that tuba at his house back in 1993. He still had all his tubas at that time and was still in DSO.
