Rotary/Oval Tenor Horn Recommendations

Post by ParLawGod »

Anyone have recommendations on good rotary (oval) tenor horns? Tried a couple Cervenys owned by friends, and the pitch was VERY suspect on both. I own a Miraphone oval euphonium...pitch on that is much better than the Cerveny tenor horns I tried (albeit not excellent...comes with the territory I guess). Figured I would ask around here nad see if there are other brands/makes I should be looking into.

Oktoberfest gigs are already gettin' on the calendar!

Thanks!

Do you literally mean tenorhorn? Or baritone /euph as well? Regardless, I'd say to look for B&S as well.

Our Peruvian Tubenet friend Jose has a great looking older B&S rotary baritone that he is selling. It's raw brass (never factory finished) and in outstanding condition. A beauty, with the blue B&S badge and all. Made in GDR. I forget his price, but I remember thinking it sounded like a good and fair price. I forget what his screen name is here!

Until you’ve found the horn you’re looking for, keep trying the Cervenys and Amatis. Certainly their consistency in quality is suspect, but I have two (one of each) with fantastic intonation. They do exist.

Thanks, everyone! Appreciate the responses so far.

Looking for a tenorhorn, but also opening to replacing my Miraphone baritone with an instrument more to my liking. I've gotten in contact with Jose regarding his B&S. Please let me know of any additional leads :)

Wessex makes several. Look under Euphoniums & Baritones. I've never played one, though.
Packer/Sterling JP377 compensating Eb; Mercer & Barker MBUZ5 (Tim Buzbee "Lone ☆ Star" F-tuba mouthpiece), Mercer & Barker MB3; for sale: Conn Monster Eb 1914, Fillmore Bros 1/4 Eb ca. 1905 antique (still plays), Bach 42B trombone
