Prokofiev 5, Previn, Los Angeles, Bobo

Post by Billy M. »

I have a few different recordings of this piece of music:

London Symphony, Previn, Fletcher (pretty sure this was on his Holton 345)

Cleveland, Szell, Roberts (Alex?)

Cleveland, Maazel, Bishop.

Just got this one of Previn conducting LA. Bobo on tuba. His playing is superb. :tuba:

I know he has a pretty varied discography, but it would have been so nice to hear him on some of the other audition standards.

Re Fletch: yes, he used his 345, and that is my favorite recording of the piece. I have a great bootleg of NYPO with Deck that is also quite nice. I have not yet come across the Bobo/LAPO recording. I do know that I like Previn's interpretations quite a bit on this work with LSO, so the LA recording would probably be something I would like. I will look for it now that I know it exists.

Thanks for the info!

Wade,

I had to special order it. It's not in print anymore. I think the LA recording is just a little bit more exciting the LSO. Fletch and Bobo have different playing styles and equipment for sure, both play great in the piece... both equally valuable and valued (by me). It's really fricken good and Bobo is well recorded.

Is there a link to purchase that special LAPO recording? I would love to hear another rare rendition of that part performed by a musician.

This is a truly exquisite recording. In addition to Roger's artistry, the entire brass section really lays it down. Previn was nonpareil in 20th Century Russian rep.

Gene Pokorny plays on the Leonard Slatkin/St. Louis S.O. version on RCA. That's a really good P5. I like the Maazel/Cleveland one also.

That was the first digital recording I bought of P5, and it's still a go-to recording.
