Who else attended either the NMC or the IAC at Interlochen?

Who else attended either the NMC or the IAC at Interlochen?

Post by Dave Detwiler »

Hi all,

I've been slowly going through some old boxes in the basement, and lately unearthed the photos and stuff I kept from the summer of 1979, when I attended the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan. Such great memories!

I created a video scrapbook from that summer, if you're interested:

Any other Interlochen alumni out there? I'm guessing there are quite a few, so share your stories!

Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1925 Pan American Sousaphone and an 1899 Conn tuba!

Rex, Harvey, Revelli, Reynolds, Goodman, Detroit, Hope, Ford, and much more...all in one summer.

‘ never once patronized the Melody Freeze, but could be found at the Hofbrau until late, and taking a dip in the Lake in the wee hours.

My kid has a diploma from the Academy.

Until a few years ago, I never had played the complete Hanson Symphony No. 2.

Fellow NMC alum here, HS 'boys', '75-77 (although my folks were on faculty waaay back in the 60s, so I kinda grew up there summers). Lots of fantastic memories, both musical and personal. It's a magical place.

I actually got to do it there in WYSO under Hanson himself in his waning years. :tuba:

Here's me next to Rex Conner.

We had Mibietch back in the 80's. Seriously considered going to the Academy, but not going is probably one regret. Did manage to run into several alums during my stint in the Navy Fleet bands. Wonderful times.

I attended camp in 1985 on bass trombone and then worked in HSB from 92-98. Played many a polka night on a borrowed tuba.

One thing I do remember is a couple (only one or two) of the Michigan-based tuba students ridiculing my Miraphone (which actually was a MiraPHone).
They were barely old enough to vote, and - likely (being quite impressionable) - were just parroting local-to-them sales blather.

Was that at the Fireplace Inn in Karlin, by any chance? I think that's where I played tuba on polka night during the summer of 1981, when I was on HSB staff. Tons of fun - and Frederick Fennell sat in with us one week on percussion!
