SCTV

Post by bloke »

SCTV was the "one-station fictitious TV network" predecessor/version of "The Office".

If you missed it, well... you suck.

The best ever episode of SCTV was the one guest hosted by Gordon Liddy. He did a sketch as Goldilocks that was sui generis (as Gordon liked to say on his old radio show).

The below was my favorite repeating sketch…

My friend got the collection on laserdisc when it came out

You could see things on laser discs in slow mo or stop that were missed on TV or VHS. Like when the scene faded out and Catherine O’Hara forgot to put panties on.

@bloke I'm not sure i follow the Office connection, other than they both tend to be funny? I guess i should watch more of the Office, but i thought it was strictly situational comedy, whereas SCTV is sketch comedy. Granted, if the situation is being a TV channel parodying news and sketch comedy shows, i suppose that works as a way of merging the two.

But yeah, i too am a fan of Second City TV.

i offer this as being musical in nature, and heavy on the Dave Thomas*:

And i also really liked their version of Ben-Hur.

(Honorable mention, Bob and Doug McKenzie (er, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) got their start as Canadian content on SCTV, eventually going on to get their own movie: Strange Brew up against a bad guy portrayed Max von Sydow. Also a bunch of SNL folk got their start in the Second City scene before it found its way onto tv)

So much talent on this show. I was lucky enough to grow up in Detroit so we could watch CBC and this stuff was so great.
Can anyone ID the tuba? ;)

Gotta check out the tuba solo at about 30:27! Interesting none of the musicians are listed in the credits or on IMDB.

...so I guess people dispose of them - there - a little bit at a time…??

It's interesting how regional Dyngus day is. Growing up in Detroit, I don't ever remember Dyngus day being a big thing in Hamtramck. I think now that people are seeing how Buffalo likes to party, it's going to be a bigger thing

Even back in the day (before my time) there were Pulaski Day parades, but no Dyngus Day. Although in the (Polis/Catholic) schools I'm told it was like an extra Valentines Day.

Me?? Any excuse to  is OK with me!!
