Drum throne instead?
Does anyone use a cheap drum throne as a replacement for an expensive tuba stand? Am I putting my horn in danger if I go this route?

I have been using a drum throne for at least ten years. I find them much more stable than a stand. The downside of the throne is that it is one more thing to carry to a performance. The King tubas I own do very well with the "Hercules" stands that I purchased. The drum throne is used for my Holton "Mammoth" as the bottom bow is so large that it will not fit safely onto the Hercules stand.

Even the cheap drum thrones are designed to support adults, and tubas weigh a LOT LESS than adults. If you're still concerned, get a throne with double-braced legs. It's still cheaper than a tuba stand, and pretty darned sturdy.
I have to bring my own chair to most of my gigs, so I have bas@$$ throne I take along for that. To minimize the bulk I carry, I continue to use a tuba stand instead of ANOTHER throne, but a mediocre/decent throne can make for a good/great tuba stand.

I looked into a drum stand when I got the Martin, but I wasn't crazy about the size and weight it would add to the things I already have to carry to/from rehearsal. I've found the Martin does fine with a Baltimore Brass playing stand, and the stand fits into the case I use to carry my music stand. I replaced the original tightening nob (round knurled head) with one I got at Ace HW (shown below) that is much easier to tighten with one hand.
