Tuba Exchange Horns

Post by tylerferris1213 »

I can't remember exactly. Who does Tuba Exchange import from? And after they get them, they tweak them as necessary for quality control, right?

St. Petersburg horns from Ukraine, not old St. Petersburg anymore. The quality control as far as fit and finish is better than the early ones decades ago but there's still some major ergonomics issues that the T.E. is missing before they ship out. Why do you ask, or asking for a friend?

I think the Tuba Exchange horns are JinBao. I know atleast they sell a 186 clone and a thor clone, but I'm sure there's more.

Yeah, the 186 clone would be Jinbao. Apologies about the St. Pete link, as that’s the first brand I associate with TE since they are the sole distributor here in the USA and they’ve been doing it since the early 1990s.

Yes I realized he might have been talking about the "Tuba Exchange" stencil horns after I posted and not actual St. Petes. Probably Jinbao.

This explains the terrible quality 203N piston horn I tried out early 2020. The main tuning slide was built at least 4'' too short, all the other slides were not correct either for proper tuning. Beautiful horn, but unplayable. I would expect more from my friends in old Slovakia. We need Karel Sin as quality control inspector :smilie2:

The best ones came out of St Petersburg from around 2002-2008. They should have stayed there, but economically Russia is always a fluid situation so Ukraine might have offered them cheaper operating expenses and labor.

A big shop in Germany (FMB in Gütersloh) has an own special St. Petersburg Tuba. That means: German valves (made by Voigt, Markneukirchen) complete gold brass tubes, incl. mainslide, and optional yellow or gold brass body. The gold brass is a high standard made in Germany. FANTASTIC BBb Tuba!
