SOLD: Meinl Weston 2141 Eb w/ bag

Post by kingrob76 »

No trades.

This MW 2141 Eb is in excellent condition and comes with a brand new (never out of the house) Miraphone top-loading gig bag (which fits perfectly). This horn has a .748" (.768") bore and a 17 1/4" bell. Silver plating is 100%, no wear spots. I can detect two dents - one on the outside of the top bow (pictured) and one on the outside of the top of the 5th valve slide (not pictured because it's smaller than a BB). I did everything I could to emphasize the top bow dent photographically for disclosure purposes, but I would definitely call it minor (smaller than my pinky fingernail and quite shallow). Four non-compensating pistons and one rotary valve means it blows free and open compared to the Besson 983 this horn replaced for me. This definitely falls in the "do it all" category of Eb tubas.

Horn is located in Reston, VA. $5,700 plus shipping. Did I mention no trades? If you pick it up I'll throw in a hard case. Baltimore Brass has a used lacquer one with no case for $5,995 in comparable condition, for reference.

What are the other physical dimensions? And how does this play and sound compared to a Wilson?(I know, subjective question) I'm very interested in a versatile Eb, but I have quite a few to try and get my hands on first.

It's not nearly as "hefty" as the Willson in either size or weight. It's a lot closer to the Besson

It's almost physically identical to a Besson 983 in terms of height and bell diameter, but whereas the 983 is a "singer" this horn definitely feels more comfortable in the lower end. My first Eb was a YEB-321 and this feels bigger in sound and presence.

No feet were harmed or directly visible in the making of this ad (reflections are all CGI). There's a corner of a dog crate with a blanket on it, but that's about it. :teeth:

That's encouraging because I really enjoyed a lot about the besson I tried, but the low end felt just a bit restrictive. Are the valve ergonomics similar then? What's the intonation like in the low end? I'm also somewhat curious what made you decide to sell it. It seems like these don't pop up often.

I don't think a lot of these were made, the market for this type of horn became saturated pretty quickly I suspect. I'm selling it because I am financing the purchase of other instruments this is the odd man out. Intonation is ok - it's not a "point and shoot" instrument and it's some work to play it in tune (alternate fingerings, slide pulls) but I've played tubas that are far more challenging when it comes to intonation.
