He does not appear to have a mouth for wind instruments...

I have another version from that photo shoot.
I agree about it being a 692. As I know you know, the BBb 712 had the smaller upper bow behind the top bow (big end) to in front of it (small end) and it was up just about touching the top bow.
On the back of my picture it says something about him trying to drum up support to donate instruments to servicemen stationed in Alaska...

Agree. There were only a handful or two (in the teens I seem to think) of the 692 made.
Who would have been playing for Columbia Pictures in the early forties?

That B&S model that came out (quite a few years ago) that was supposed to reference these...
How well do those play...and how well do those play in tune?
I believe Cameron Gates may have bought one, while still in the Marine Band.

The horn in that publicity still looks quite new for the date (1942), and sports a later version (late 30s - early 40s ?) of engraving.
Widely known in his own day, mostly forgotten now....
By all accounts I’ve read, Joe E.
