York 692?

Thinking this might be a 692, based on the configuration of the 4th valve slide and the shortness of the MTS and 5th branch....?

I didn't recognize him until the second photo.

He does not appear to have a mouth for wind instruments...

Should be a bass player...

I agree about it being a 692. As I know you know, the BBb 712 had the smaller upper bow behind the top bow (big end) to in front of it (small end) and it was up just about touching the top bow.

On the back of my picture it says something about him trying to drum up support to donate instruments to servicemen stationed in Alaska...

Agree. There were only a handful or two (in the teens I seem to think) of the 692 made.

Who would have been playing for Columbia Pictures in the early forties?

I believe Cameron Gates may have bought one, while still in the Marine Band.

Further, the 692 sported roughly 100% more curb-appeal.

The horn in that publicity still looks quite new for the date (1942), and sports a later version (late 30s - early 40s ?) of engraving.

By all accounts I’ve read, Joe E. Brown was in real life a “stand-up” sort of fellow - for example, he traveled with the USO entertaining our troops on his own dime, so this caption doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Widely known in his own day, mostly forgotten now....

I stand corrected. He could fit in a clarinet and trumpet on either side and he'd be perfect!!
