Dixie in Fargo

We had a very fine performance last evening in downtown Fargo. A Lutheran church hosts special events every Wednesday thru the summer, and last night it was our Dixieland band. Outdoor stage in the 90 degree heat, but some shady trees and a canopy over the band - plus plenty of provided ice water - made it pleasant. Excellent crowd, a few dancers, mobile food stand. They only wanted an hour of music but we were well paid. Following this event we walked the half-block to a nursing home and played another 20 minutes or so for the residents in air conditioned comfort. I took my "Saints" solo out into the crowd and marched/danced/wiggled while playing, earned some extra applause. Managed to be home by 10:30. All told, a terrific evening.
In this neck of the woods, those are tough gigs to find.

I've been using the 103 for this band. Only 6 other players to support, and the 103 has a very solid low range while being exquisitely portable. Our trumpeter (highly talented, army-trained player) prefers my 191 but the others either don't care or prefer the lighter sound of the 103 so Tiny Tuba gets the nod. We were on an elevated stage about 4-5 feet above the crowd so a bell-front would have been better, but they had a great sound system and each instrument was mic'ed with an experienced sound guy balancing things. The church is well-prepared for this type of event.

Lutherans having a party, but only offering ice water??? Those cold winters must be affecting their brains. Down here, folks would cry sacrilege and blasphemy if special events, church picnics, etc. for the Czech Catholics and German Lutherans didn't serve beer. And, for the record, 90 degrees is easily picnic weather here. But you are PLAYING MUSIC, and that is the best part!

Frankly, I (as a tea-totaler) was more upset that there was no free Lutheran Church Hot Dish provided. (ground beef on the bottom, canned green beans on top, tater tots on top of that, crispy onion things on top of that, all covered in cream of mushroom soup. )
