Name That Tune!
Can you name these tunes?
After a recent discussions with John Noreyko about getting away from music on paper and being held back musically by being stuck to the page, and the benefits of playing tunes and songs that you know by ear, I decided to show what I sometimes do in practice sessions at home. Imperfect playing and imperfect iPhone recording, but you get the point. I was always playing through familiar songs at home when I was a kid, and I even played out of song books in some of my lessons with Dave Kirk. It’s also helpful to those who want to become better at playing by ear. Get off the paper so you can really communicate the song without being anchored to the paper. Get anchored to your message.

Re: Name That Tune!
@bort2.0, this is an iPhone recording in that room. The other video was using an Audio Technica AT4040 microphone. The iPhone doesn’t sound as good, but at least the iPhone, which is quite pressure-sensitive, didn’t clip to the extent it did in the old place. Maybe if I backed it away some, it would sound better. Whatcha think?

Loved the video, will have to give it a closer listen. Maybe one day when life settles down enough that theres one place for "tuba" in my house, I'll make some videos too.
For now, it's never twice in the same place, never without kid screaming or playing in the background, etc... :)
Great video as always... That Hagen is something special.

Re: Name That Tune!
I dream of Jeanie and Bewitched were still on when i gorged myself on daytime reruns, so i was all over them.
Recently played a medley with that era tv show themes, and Munsters was my favorite to play.
I also wonder about the embellishments on the Lerner and Loewe tune, which is in my stable of earworms, more or less straight (though i am not sure i sounded it out entirely right)

Re: Name That Tune!
We played a medley like that in high school and in a couple of community bands. Crowds loved it. And I forgot about the Munsters. That Medley also had Perry Mason.
Played the entire “thing” numerous times over the years (great music, imho), but my favorite version of that particular selection from it is a swing version by Ray Pennington and Buddy Emmons. After going back and listening to it, despite these being rough recordings, I’m disappointed in how punchy my recording of that tune sounds, it doesn’t swing enough, and I’m unhappy with the vibrato - it’s too immediate and not as much like a vocalist as it should be. Hence, my rendition is probably not helpful for your complete recall. LOLI also wonder about the embellishments on the Lerner and Loewe tune, which is in my stable of earworms, more or less straight (though i am not sure i sounded it out entirely right)

He did it as a ballad, not a swing tune.
Does that help?

Re: Name That Tune!
The first time I ever heard M.o.M. sung, it was a cappella by a really good choir director (in an old bus). He and his wife - a fine pianist - and his beautiful high-school-age daughter – a fine operatic and pop singer - were taking a well-coached high school youth choir on a huge odyssey all the way out to Colorado, and had hired me to play electric bass in their rhythm section, as I was a good bass player, and was the same age as the kids in the choir. It was only $20/day, but that was about 1972, and I was fed and housed.
I was also not supposed to tell anyone that I was being paid, as - at first - they asked me I would just “like to do it“ without offering any money. (I responded by asking them if it was worth anything to them...)
It’s funny how particular songs will trigger specific memories. I haven’t thought about that trip since about a week after it ended.
‘ sorry for not responding sooner, as I don’t check this forum very often.
EDIT:
My mom went to their own church and heard the show - which we did for the church’s own congregation, the night before we left on the trip. On the way home, she said, “You play bass really well,” as she had never heard me play bass at home, as I only spent any time practicing the (6-string) guitar, and zero time practicing the tuba.
Some of my friends asked me why I never practiced playing bass, and I would explain to them that it’s the same as guitar, except the strings are farther apart (thus easier to hit the right one), and it’s only one note at a time - and rarely any faster than quarter notes.

Re: Name That Tune!
LOL...
Something I remembered - after posting - was a motel in Salina, Kansas that was a roach-infested.
At breakfast, I quietly told the choir director that I hadn’t signed on for that, and he smiled, handed me another $20, and apologized.
The more I think back, the more I recall how I treated adults as equals, rather than as my betters. When amateurishly self-psychoanalyzing, it may (??) be because my own father had such an extremely strong personality, that no one else intimidated me in the least.

Definitely helps if you're "of a certain age" and spent a lot of time watching re-runs on TV.
For the rest, a familiarity with old movies helps.
