1935 Franz Schediwy Kaiser BBb

Post by Worth »

I've been enjoying other forum members' acquisitions vicariously and..... this is a recent local find of mine that I am soon to acquire in person and very excited about. A 1935 Franz Schediwy Kaiser BBb which looks to be in decent condition although I'm sure to be in for some play restoration here and there. It's being offered for $700. and I've committed to meeting the seller for inspection and purchase. He is a tuba player and states that it does play decently so I assume the clockwork spring mechanisms function (probably with noise I am sure). The overall condition appears to be solid and there is no reported red rot. A piece of history to work my BBb chops and enjoy! It is seen here next to a Miraphone 186 for size comparison. Really looking forward to this adventure. Hopefully a piece of history and not a piece of ^%$& I appreciate any comments and thoughts from the jury!

I believe the owner of this tuba is either in this forum or the old one.

Yep, and I forget his name!

I saw and considered that one for a while. Didn't want another project, but it didn't sound all that bad, either.

COOL TUBA!

Nice.

It will be fun, when other tubs players ask the inevitable “what horn are you playing?” To say, “Oh, it’s a Schediwy.” with a straight face and leave it at that.

I like unique horns!

No problem figuring the born on date!

Thanks for the nods! For sure, I have no misconceptions, I figure it will make a great Tuba Christmas horn as well as something to work out my BBb brain on. I really dig the design and style of these older horns and fully anticipate mechanism noise and intonation quirks. Certainly not an everyday axe but with the local availability and price, this was a no brainer for me!

Classic stuff! Sometimes it's tough to remember that SNL was actually entertaining back in the day. Thanks to you I will never get this out of my mind when playing with my Schweddy (omits last word)

Looks to be in nice shape for it's age. Once you have it sorted out it would be great if you could post a sound clip. Love to hear what it sounds like.
Thanks! I will work toward making that happen

Looks vaguely B&S-ish. Let us know how it plays!

Schediwy was a manfucturer from Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart. He was the main Manufacturers of my orchestra at the Stuttgart Opera until 1945. the Quality of these instruments can be compared to Bohland and Fuchs Tubas. Highest quality. I have the same model at home and got it completely overhauled. Great Tuba and for 700 $ fantastic

Thank you for this knowledge. I pick it up on 7/13. Once I get acquainted with the tuba, I will most likely invest some money, first for a decent play restoration where needed. That depends on where I'm willing to drive and who is predictably able to do whatever may be required to make the clockspring mechanisms as functional and noiseless as possible. I don't have a local tech who I trust and really don't want to ship it to get worked on. Some driving will be involved I'm sure!

I have to mention that this tuba is not a real Kaisertuba. Its inbetween 4/4-5/4 the bore is not 21.5 mm as on most of the german kaisertubas its 20 or 20.5mm

I just checked over on YouTube and I'm amazed at the number of tubas he demos and or owns :bow2:

AFAIK, bore size isn’t the only determining factor of how a 6/4 or Kaiser, also bow and bell throat diameter.
