Nice playing

Post by Ace »

I have never heard of this tubist, but he does a great job with the playing of Saint-Saens "The Swan". For an older man, his breath control is pretty darn good.

Couple of other ones I really like:

Also: Nessun Dorma

I'll stop now. Just tremendously impressed with his playing.

Hans Nickel is a tremendous player. It's a shame he isn't more well-known here in the U.S.

For that matter, do the younger players know of and discuss all the legendary players (worldwide) from past and present?

Hans is not young, but there are surely other professionals who are older (like Gene).

For that matter, it seems difficult to find ages of tuba players easily on the Internet. Like, I can guess how old Alan Baer is, and I did eventually find it... but it sure wasn't easy to find it online.

Also, because I was curious, he plays an HBS-388 F in all the videos. His big horn is an HBS-193. See here.

No. They don't. It's to their detriment. This is a major goal of my soon to be launched podcast. The players were legendary for a reason. No.One.Listens.Enough.

The CD, CanTUBAllada by Hans Nickel is terrific. This CD has one of the best recordings of the Vaughan Williams' Concerto.

I'm not sure if this CD is still available; but I highly recommend it.

How many of us were thinking "If I ever grow up, I want to be able to play like that"?

That's Hans like 30+ years ago, looks like he plays Adams F tuba now. I wonder if he still owns anything from that list.
