The valve piston he shows doesn't look so terrible to me. Mine are discolored etc., and they still seem to do the job about like any old tuba. It's important to keep them lubricated for minimal wear on that narrow ledge in between the openings, but it looks like there's original surface there.

My guess is that even when new these valves didn’t seal as well as they should’ve. I used a slightly heavy synthetic on mine and they were okay.
