tackling a couple of trashed YBB-321 tubas

Post by bloke »

I'm getting REALLY CLOSE to getting back on track with the pair of Holton 345 tubas...
Once these are done, other repairs in the way are only 1-to-3-hours-each types of repairs.

I have to completely straighten out a pair of these Yamaha YBB–321 tubas for a middle school, before I can get back to my epic projects that individuals are waiting for me to complete for them.
The smashed-in small side of the main bow is so predictable on these, I believe they should change the model number to YBB–321D (for "D-shaped Dent"), yes?
oh yeah:
and I am either repairing or replacing all of the knuckle tubing that comes out of the casings into the slides, too.
...and here’s some music, by with to look at the picture:

With Karen singing so nicely, it's a d@mn shame that the flute in the intro is c. 15c sharp. :eyes:

(I've actually made some progress (on the smashed INNER bows, and on the repairable-due-do-cost-of-a-replacement bottom bow cap, since this picture was taken, as well as having begun to round out the open end of the upper bow. York-boy also donated a repairable - better-shape-than-this-one bottom bow cap for the OTHER YBB-321. BOTH of these YBB-321 tubas are the VERY early ones, with the small finger buttons, the metal valve guides, the fine threads on the valve caps, the super-long/straight #3 slides, the the painted-on brand name on the bell. As far as tubas go, most view these as yawners...I view them as $$$$.)

I may be able to get back to the pair of these instruments, tomorrow.
I had to jump over to the Bach and Reynolds (to fix up in order to loan to a school, until a couple of JPs are shipped off to them from the warehouse, this week).
If lucky, I will coax the band director into going ahead and buying the loaner Bach and Reynolds, because his band program is growing wildly.

Once I get this pair of really beat-up first-generation 321 tubas fixed, I’ll be pretty darn close to getting back to the pair of Holton 345 6/4 tubas. 😎
…only three import 3/4 tuba repairs, a couple of crappy mellophone repairs (Put off for a month, because not urgent…but now needed), and two customer instruments.

Valve section alignment/re-doing work (Holton 345s) requires a lot of attention to detail, but I actually kind of like it - because I can do it mostly sitting down, mostly without doing a lot of dirty work, and mostly without a lot of noise.
Plus, it’s sort of rewarding to do something better than “good enough“.
