Minnesota tuba repair?

Post by bort2.0 »

My regular repair person had her shop ruined by the Minneapolis riots in 2020 :facepalm2: , and won't be back up and running until about October.

I know of one other option (EP) who does great work but for reasons I won't get into here... I'm not going back.

I also know of a person up in Duluth who could do the work, but thats a little far and might be tricky for me.

Minnesota people... Anyone else that you can recommend?

The job is to a few utility-level repairs to my 1895 Conn Eb. Not worth getting it down to Lee Stofer or shipping it farther elsewhere. Just looking for someone local who can do some solder work and steady things up a bit.

Thanks!

Brett,
I believe instrument repair is taught at a school in Red Wing, south of you along the MN/WI border. I'll look for more details, but you may already know about them. They should have someone on staff or a talented student ready to do the work.
BTW, the drive there on hwy 61 is beautiful. We've taken that route to the in-laws many times.

This distinguished gentleman just changed jobs, but is probably at least as qualified to work on tubas as he was to participate in his previous profession.

This could (??) be a picture of him attempting to remove a couple of bulges.

Thanks, Tim.
Thanks(?) Joe.

Schmitt music is about 3 miles from home... May try to give them a call and see what they can do.

Kurt Haas at Haas instrument Repair in New Brighton. They work on everything but Kurt does really good work with tubas. I take everything to him right now for the reasons you mentioned earlier.

If you havent found anything closer, Leithold Music in LaCrosse, WI (about 2 hours from Minneapolis) has a talented brass technician who is also a tuba player. He has been keeping my old tubas in working order.
