Re: Conn Jumbo Wanted!!!! 4 Valve preferred or 3
I have never had the pleasure of playing one of the true "Jumbo" models (42K, 44K, 46K, 48K), but I have played one of the "Grand" models. Remember that the 4-valve, with one of the better known models being the 40K, was designed to be the bass to jazz ensembles in the '20's. I had the use of a 38K some decades ago, the 3-valve "Grand." I can tell you it weighed over 35 pounds, and was a bear, even with the factory shoulder plate to help even the load. The upside is that the fundamental was so broad it was the only instrument outside of cranking the bass knob on my bass guitar amp that I could feel it in the floor, with the regular valves (not the short-action valves of the 20K) intonation was superlative, and the transition from 1+3 low F to privileged tones Eb down to true pedal BBb was seamless and were just as big, round, and impressive, no hint of graininess or other fault in the tone.
