1987 Miraphone 188 - SOLD

Here’s a 1987 Mirafone 188 in very good condition. There’s no dents, only a few tiny dings.Very little lacquer wear. I’ve had the leadpipe replaced to Nickel due to red rot, and all the valves are vented. It comes with a Miraphone gig bag, and I could include an almost new SKB case for extra. I picked over this tuba and did a mouthpipe swap, prior to the owner making a decision to sell it...
...so it should be in really good shape!

fwiw, I've sold tubas of this model and in this condition for a good bit MORE than this (factoring in inflation - ie. all of the money-printing, stimuluses, and debt-monetizing).

I concur - this instrument is under-priced (IMO), in excellent visible condition, and from an era when this model could literally be bought sight unseen with a very high acceptance rate. If I had not already procured a 188 this one would be my probable next choice.

I bought a 188 new in 1987 (I assume it was not new old-stock). Outstanding tuba. Superb intonation and response. Consistency was top notch from tuba to tuba in this highly-regarded vintage.

The butterfly effect of that Wessex bell not being salvageable is the reason this particular horn isn't sitting in your living room. Ain't that a B?

Life is funny, or "funny", that's for sure. I've had about 6 different 188's floated to me over the past month or two. Any one of them is certain to be an excellent sounding tuba and the best possible construction. Shocked that these are not more popular, but admittedly, know that I'm also not owning one...

VERY fine tubas, awesome ergonomics, and the best looking tuba too, IMO!

This tends to pertain to good-playing tubas:

There was so much to love, I could not love it all.

I run across quite a few gems, but must employ discipline. Otherwise, some of them would - sadly - end up as have some gems in that Carolina collection: collecting dust, and going to waste. On the flipside of the coin, I could be trying to maintain familiarity with a dozen wonderful tubas, and failing - then - to maintain top-level familiarity with any one of them.

Based on the consistent track record of this model, this is probably one of those gems. Having played it for a moment - a while back, it seemed mighty nice.

Personally, I think they shouldn’t sell it.

As low as this price is, as little as money is worth (certainly, since all of this recent money printing), and as good as this equipment is, I just can’t see the seller coming out of winner as the result of such a sale.
