That’s Wilbur Hall playing trombone. He was also a gifted violinist who was active in Vaudeville.

Paul Whiteman gets a lot of criticism for not being a true “jazz band”, but he always knew to hire some of the best jazz musicians available (including Bix, Frankie Trumbauer and Pee Wee Russell, among others).
