fantasy, or reality...??

Post by bloke »

It's a cool summer evening, in a huge outdoor amphitheater. Henry Mancini raises his baton, looks at you, winks, and you push out the most raucous "low F" whole notes on your Miraphone 184 that you can conjure up. He grins. The Peter Gunn Theme - the night's bring-the-house-down chart, has begun. The orchestra (a "Riddle/Mancini-esque" orchestration, which is a combination of a symphony orchestra and a big band) plays 2/3rds of the way through the chart. Will Lee plays a 5-minute bass solo. The last two choruses are played, and the crowd stands and roars for several minutes.

yep...That's part of my past. :smilie7:

Great story. Who says you can't play a 184 in orchestra? I'm glad I own one.

goshdern right. fwiw, one of the best low range Eb tubas I've played was the rotary St. Pete Eb. Very consistent, could really take buckets of air. I'm not sure I've played a bass tuba that matches it. The MW 2141 was strong and Marty Erickson is a supremely awesome person, but that muh Russia Eb could haul donkey. Very consistent throughout the range as well. Both Miraphones I played were bleh. Oystein does rock it; I read somewhere he plays the Star with groups and the Star Light as a solo horn, not sure how accurate that is.

'tfw when your budget 3 valve Eb cimbasso can't bang out low F's like that European guy who streamed playing Dimmu Borgir orchestrations' 🤣

oh yeah, Joe's experiences... sorry

Others’ stream of consciousness posts are welcome in this thread.

reality check:
Mancini did not hire me to play “cimbasso”. He hired me to play the tuba.

Just realize that when you hear or play “Pink Panther”, “Moon River”, “Days of Wine and Roses”, “Charade”, “Baby Elephant Walk”, etc., etc… that the old bloke – albeit only a couple of times each - played all of those under Mancini‘s baton.

My friend, Bob Gilbert (horn), toured with him (probably a decade earlier) - along with Brazil 66, and would sit on the airplane next to Lani Hall and chit-chat. 😳❤️
