Could be!
Who knows?

There's something due any day;
I will know right away,
Soon as it shows.

It may come cannonballing down through the sky,
Gleam in its eye,
Bright as a rose!

Who knows?

It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Under a tree.

I got a feeling there's a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

Could it be? Yes, it could.
Something's coming, something good,
If I can wait!

Something's coming, I don't know what it is,
But it is
Gonna be great!

With a click, with a shock,
Phone'll jingle, door'll knock,
Open the latch!

Something's coming, don't know when, but it's soon;
Catch the moon,
One-handed catch!

Around the corner, or whistling down the river,
Come on, deliver
To me!

Will it be? Yes, it will.
Maybe just by holding still,
It'll be there!

Come on, something, come on in, don't be shy,
Meet a guy,
Pull up a chair!

The air is humming,
And something great is coming!

Who knows?

It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Maybe tonight…

Maybe tonight…

Maybe tonight…

I played a run of West Side Story for a local theater group on lead trombone back in 2002 or so. Every song in that book is a gem (despite the key signatures) and is a testament to a collaboration between a skilled lyricist and composer. A book that is riddled with dissonance and difficult intervals, yet they sound exactly right in context. Years before, as an undergrad, we used “Maria” as a benchmark for the tritone and “Somewhere” for a minor 6th.

And speaking of “Somewhere”, whenever I hear this song, no matter what rendition, it’s indeed a moving masterpiece. During that two week run some two decades ago, I can still remember the anticipation of hearing that song sung well and it lifting my spirits.

Knowing West Side Story is returning to the cinema was interesting to me. I mean the original film is fantastic, yet I am eagerly anticipating what is done with the work now.

RIP, Mr. Sondheim, and thank you for all the wonderful memories.

I’ve only seen a taped performance. It’s currently available online here:

It’s probably my favorite Sondheim.

You won’t get a counter argument from me. Ever seen this?
