When it’s time for Christmas…

Post by matt g »

…it’s time to break out the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble album.

It’s a yearly reminder of how awesome Mr. Torchinsky’s sound was. Still my second favorite “tuba sound” after Mr. Deck. These two gentlemen define what a tuba should sound like in my head.

Always a pleasure to listen to this album.

That is playing in my shop as I type this. It is easily one of the all-time greatest Christmas albums. Even stores play it in the background. (Well, the *good* stores that do not punish their employees by playing "All I Want for Christmas is You" all day.)

Digging down the rabbit hole of the Philadelphia Brass on youtube, also found this one. Rings true as I can't count how many times I was asked if I ever thought of playing a smaller instrument when Abe was asked. Cool King rotary horn it looks like.

That is an awesome clip - thank you for posting it!

FWIW, watching this clip from the Mike Douglas Show brings back some great memories of how television used to be……(IIRC, it aired on NBC at 4 in the afternoon).

…..and those Robert King arrangements that always seemed to add an integral baritone horn part (the rumor was that he was a baritone horn player…….)

The Philadelphia Brass album is full of tastefully arranged standards done with excellence. Really great stuff.

My other go-to Christmas album is the London Brass.

And some Chanticleer thrown in.

And I recently acquired this   :bow2: :
