Where is this tuba?

Post by Stryk »

OK, going down an old rabbit hole again. I have looked for this horn for years! It was owned by LB Oliver, also in the picture of the octet. I was a student of Earle Louder in the 70s while he was getting his doctorate at FSU. He had borrowed this tuba from LB Oliver, who later sold it to Ivan Hammond who sold it to someone he can't remember. This horn is a Martin (verified by Earle, LB, and Ivan). @Dan Schultz has helped me dive into this abyss, too.

I would also love to know more about it. It looks a little smaller than the rotary Martin CC that Jay McAllister played. Also his rotors were vertically oriented, rather than the other on an angle.

I’ve wondered if it was Marzan’s handiwork.

All tubas "might be in Austin". I have seen them "might being" there, and it is quite an impressive sight.

I'd be very interested in buying this if it ever shows up. My fear is that it has become scrap. The bugle was getting VERY thin in places.

That's my fear too. If it does exist, it'd be a good idea to at least get a copy of it. That way it'll be more preserved!

Wasn't Marzan famous for that "slant Rotor" model? That's a pretty angled slant on that horn.
Bearin' up!

He was and he is a student in that picture of the octet. Makes you go "hmmm".

I wouldn't say it is looks like new, but it is in much better shape than when I bought it. It also plays much better than it did when I bought it. It had some problems, but it is a great player now. It is truly a joy to play, and I love the history of that tuba.
