Nice looking tuba. I had one of these for a while, and it was easy to play and had a pleasant sound.

While this means very little towards how well this horn may play, the slide layout on these is far better than the PT-3/4/6/7P, imo.

Edit your images if you do not want to be in your own photos. People can learn more about you or your home than you may want from the reflection in the bell of a tuba. I always look carefully at the pics I post, and "fuzz out" anything I don't want others to see. There is nothing to hide here, but I would have brushed over myself anyway. You can never be too careful on the Internet with images taken in your home. Just sayin'…

There’s a few free “blur” apps one can download from the App Store that do this quite easily.

Also nice for taking photos of cars and blurring out license plates and stuff like that.

I recall making a photo to prove to Götz the width of the Hirsbrunner, and when I looked at the photo, I had to immediately delete it.

The bows on this tuba are really a bit fatter than you'd expect, it's a nice design and I think it really played well.

My beef with it, though, is that when it is pushed too hard, it started to get that weird kind of choked sound too easily. Hard to explain the sound, but it just didn't stay open enough for me when I pushed it. Maybe I just was playing it wrong.

In the low register and in the overall size, I think the MW Ursus is the full potential of what the PT-606 could have been.

I’ve played several of these. I never understood why they route the 4th slide downwards. Some Willsons do the same thing. Some examples I’ve played of the 606 are pretty pitchy, play before you buy!

Bort, I agree! I think the Ursus is a 606 with a redesigned valveset. It looks like the exact same bugle to my eye. If only they’d put a normal leadpipe on those horns!

Mine was lacquer, and in very nice shape except for lacquer wear on the bottom bow -- otherwise really really clean tuba. I think I sold it for $5,200, and it took a while at that price.

Problem is -- the 4/4 CC 4p1r market is crowded with some really nice playing Chinese tubas. And if you've got the $ for a good used German 4/4 CC, you've got the money for a good new Chinese CC -- gasp, maybe even a better Chinese CC!

So, there are just a lot of options for the same $.

And when you get up to the $8k+ range, there are a lot of *different* options around if you're looking to spend that kind of money.

To your point:

I don't know that the Eastman 632 and 832 are quite as large as a 606 (but not much smaller), but they play like a freekin dream and for a lot less money. And the Wessex Wyvern surprised me with a "holy $#!+ this is good" experience, and it comes in for less money than $8K+. The 606, IMHO, does not play anywhere as good as those two, and costs much more used than those two do brand new.

Hmm... for $8500 or more, you might land a used Bruckner when one comes up. Or a 188. 129X. PT 20. Possibly a PT 6. An older Thor. Or hold out for a rare 2155. Lots of possibilities...

The 606 just has fat bows... otherwise, it's the same kind of 37" tall and 19" bell with a .750" bore (or whatever the actual numbers are!). It's a pretty standard size. I liked it a lot, just a good 4/4 CC is no longer a rarity.

The PT-606 (aka GR-41, if you want to sound cool) exists for people like me, who want a German-made tuba oder nichts!

Right. And to be clear I’d rather play a 606 than an Eastman 4/4. But to Doc’s point, the 606 isn’t a lot of horn for $8,500. Used Pt6’s and Thors come to mind around that price, the occasional Willson if you’re into that. And the Chinese stuff IS very comparable at better price points.

Right now it’s a buyer’s market, it seems to me. With everyone wanting the new Chinese 6/4 tubas the German stuff is just getting harder to sell, and honestly harder to find. Usually there’s a bunch of Thors and Pt6/6P’s out there, now there’s maybe one or two of each.
